In the fight to become the third viable ecosystem behind Android and iOS, Windows Phone, for now, wins the battle. Kantar has today published new data on smartphone sales during the last three months to the end of February and the results show significant progress at the expense of Windows Phone BlackBerry. In the UK, for example, Windows Phone now has nearly 7% share (up from 3% a year ago) and BlackBerry has fallen to 5.1% (compared to 17% a year ago or 5.8% in late January). First? Assault for Microsoft?

Figures are not yet significant enough to say that Windows Phone is a clear third ecosystem, but in Italy, according to Kantar, and has a share of 13%, 6.8% in Germany, 4.1% in the U.S. . or 5.9% in Mexico. In all these countries, except Mexico, where BlackBerry still has a 22% share, Microsoft is well ahead of the Canadian. They have reversed roles in a couple of years.

United Kingdom is the country where BlackBerry has launched its first Z10 and, according to Kantar, the results are not spectacular moment. “The launch of the Z10 has not resulted in an immediate change to the Canadian company in the UK. BlackBerry will take time to get to gain market share,” they say in Kantar.

In short, good news not only for Microsoft, Nokia and HTC also the first with the Lumia and the second with the HTC 8X, who are pushing Windows Phone to the third place finish.

Otherwise, Android continuous domain worldwide except USA which is more even: iOS has 43.5% market share (up 3.5% from one year ago) and Android 51.2% (5.8% more than in the same period of 2012)
