Snapchat has exploded to become one of the most used social media apps today. This is largely due to its fun, youthful vibe. Initially, Snapchat was used mainly by teenagers. Today, just about everyone seems to have a Snapchat account.

Celebrities keep their followers updated on their day or project simply by posting quick snaps.

Companies have learned to acknowledge the potential the app has in interacting with customers. For its many users, Snapchat is used the old-fashioned way – to share quick photos and videos with family and friends.

The only problem with Snapchat is the confusion it brings to new – and even old – users. For Snapchat noobs, here is a guide that walks you through the basics of this fun social media app.

The Basics

Snapchat was introduced in 2011 and easily became one of the fastest-growing social media platforms in the market. Unlike other social networking apps, a photo or video you post on Snapchat – called a "snap" – is just available for up to ten seconds. Following that, the image permanently disappears. The app likewise lets you doodle on your photos, put effects, and record short videos.

Create a Profile

Creating a Snapchat account is pretty basic. You simply need to type in a working email address, pick a password, and input your birth date. A Snapchat user must be at least 13 years old.

You will then be asked to choose a username that will serve as your identity on the app. This is how other users will find your account, too. For the final step, you're to provide a phone number for verification. You need to verify both the phone number and the email address before using the account.

Take a Snap

Snapchat automatically activates your camera. From there, you just take photos as you normally would. Tap anywhere on the screen to focus. You can also turn the flash on and off, and switch between the front and rear camera. To take a snap, just click the circle at the bottom of the screen. Hold it if you wish to record a quick video (max of 10 seconds).

Edit the Snap

You can add captions, draw some doodles or add effects to your snap.

  • Emoji – located at the first button in the right corner. To add or move an emoji on your snap, just drag it to where you want it placed. To delete it, just drag it back to the button, which turns into a recycle bin.
  • Caption – activated through the letter T. You have three style options for captioning: centered text, big letters, and small letters.
  •

Doodle – activated through the pencil tool. To change the color of the pen, pick the color you want on the color palette. To delete, just click the undo button beside the pencil.

In the lower left corner of the screen, you’ll notice a little timer that allows you to choose the length of your snap. Again, 10 seconds is the maximum period available. Next to the timer is the "Save" button you can use to save the snaps on your phone. The last button enables you to add a snap to your story. This means everyone youve shared your snap with can view it for the next 24 hours.

Lastly, to add effects to your snap, simply swipe the screen to the left or to the right. Filters must be enabled in the settings to enjoy this feature. According to some experts who sell electronics, when youre familiar with the Snapchat basics, youll easily get the hang of its other features.
