If you’ve walked into any of those stores that sell electronics in recent months, then you’ve probably noticed a few drone displays. Some probably dismissed them as fancy toys that are just trendy at the moment, but would eventually lose its spark and fade into the background. Considering the results of a recent photography contest however, it seems that the power of drones is not going away anytime soon. For through the contest submissions, an entire world of possibilities opened up for people who understand what drone technology can actually be used for.

The Dronestagram Contest’s Second Year

Surprisingly, this is actually the second year that this contest was held. Dronestagram is an online hub for drone enthusiasts, especially for photographers who take their shots to a whole new level. It does seem that the amazing perspective that these drones offer makes the images take almost surreal, as they capture moments that the naked human eye may not be able to see on a regular basis. This year ushered in even more entries, with over 5,000 entries from all over the world. There were four categories all in all: Places, Nature, Popular Prizes (most liked pictures), and Dronies (selfies, but using a drone).

Except for the photos that received the most number of likes under the Popular Prizes category, the rest of the photo entries were judged by experts in the field. These judges include Ken Geiger, a Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer for National Geographic, and Jean-Pierre Vrignaud, who is not only the Editor-in-Chief of National Geographic France, but is also Editor-in-Chief of the Dronestagram site itself. The criteria used for judging included photographic quality and creativity.

The Impact of Drone Technology

Seeing the amazing images that these drone photographers were able to capture, it does seem that drone photography offers so much more to both photographers and their audiences. It also opens up a lot of possibilities, seeing how wide the scope of these drones truly are.

Aside from the usual goal of taking breathtaking photos and videos for human appreciation, they can also be used for far more important things like land surveying. These drones can work on taking images of acres of land, allowing individuals and groups to gather data that would usually take them longer to accumulate.

And it doesn’t even end with the use of drones in relation to audio and video. Drones can also be used in logistics, as they are fully capable of delivering small packages and documents from one place to another. This proves to be useful inside commercial complexes and office buildings. Even DHL and Amazon have proven the drone’s aptitude in delivering parcels to distant islands. So for those who think that drone technology is just a passing trend, you may have to think again. This is just the beginning of an industry that has opens so much opportunities for people, especially when it comes to replacing a few human functions for something that could be safer, faster, and more efficient.
