Will the next iPhones have larger batteries? They might! That’s the latest speculation surrounding the upcoming iPhones. With smaller circuitry, there’s just enough internal space to install larger batteries. But will Apple use it to upgrade the batteries or to add 5G technology?

Let’s take a closer look at the latest rumors.

Smaller Circuitry, Larger Battery

According to Korean publication The Elec, the next iteration in Apple’s flagship series will come with a smaller protection module package (PMP), which is responsible for preventing smartphones from overcharging and over-discharging. It’s almost 50% smaller and lighter compared to previous modules. This gives Apple more internal space to install an even larger battery.

The iPhone 12 might have a larger battery capacity than the iPhone 11 Pro, which currently has the largest battery life of all iPhone iterations. It can last five hours longer than the iPhone XS.

Some expect Apple to use the extra internal space to provide support for the highly anticipated 5G technology, which requires larger circuit boards. If it will be used to support 5G, there won’t be enough room for larger batteries.

ITM Semiconductor is anticipated to supply Apple with the smaller protection modules, ones with Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor (MOSFET) and Protection Circuit Board (PCB). Aside from powering phones, the smaller PMPs might be used on tablets and computers.

The tech giant can easily get other suppliers. However, ITM Semiconductor might also end up as Apple’s sole supplier for the smaller PMPs, given that they’re working on a third Vietnamese plant, which is allegedly for Apple products only.

At Least Four New iPhones in 2020

Aside from larger batteries, the 2020 iPhones are expected to have a design overhaul. Apple might be revisiting the iPhone 4 design and recreating it to fit the modern iterations. Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst for TF International Securities, suggests that Apple might refresh its smartphone lineup’s design although the current one was only introduced two years ago.

Kuo expects three iPhone models to come in new sizes and with OLED displays. The entry-level model might have a 5.4-inch screen, while the Pro models might have 6.1-inch to 6.7-inch screens. Furthermore, Apple’s upcoming iPhones might support the latest 5G technology, which delivers faster wireless speeds and minimal latency.

Similarly, Samik Chatterjee, a J.P. Morgan analyst, anticipates the new iPhones to come with OLED screens and 5G networks.

2020 iPhones Might Launch in Fall

If Apple sticks to tradition, the next iPhone models could be released sometime in September of this year. Remember that the company has yet to confirm the speculations, so take the latest information with a grain of salt.

So, what can we expect from the upcoming iPhones?

As with previous iPhones, the upcoming model might be more expensive than previous iterations. That doesn’t mean you should sell your MacBook and iPhone units to prepare for Apple’s next flagship phone. Until the tech giant makes a statement, don’t do anything drastic.
