The HP 17 (2021) is the generation that introduced the lift-hinge redesign still used on the current HP 17 line, sold in two parallel hardware families: the Intel 17-cn0 generation built on 11th-generation Core processors, and the AMD 17-cp0 generation built on Ryzen 5000-series processors. It was the first HP 17 to drop the optical drive on mainstream trims, add a USB-C port, and move toward SSD storage. Two things set 2021 apart from later years for resale purposes: many units shipped with older Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 4.2 rather than Wi-Fi 6, and some still carried a slower spinning hard drive. Because this model shipped in many processor, memory, storage, and display combinations across both CPU brands, your exact configuration dictates the final resale price. 2021 model 17-cn0 (Intel) 17-cp0 (AMD) First lift-hinge generation
Intel configurations — 17-cn0 (2021)
Processor (CPU)
- Intel Core i3-1125G4 — 4 cores, 8 threads, up to 3.7 GHz
- Intel Core i5-1135G7 — 4 cores, 8 threads, up to 4.2 GHz, 8MB cache
- Intel Core i7-1165G7 — 4 cores, 8 threads, up to 4.7 GHz, 12MB cache
- Entry trims also shipped with Intel Celeron / Pentium-class processors
Graphics (GPU)
- Intel Iris Xe Graphics (on Core i5 / i7 units)
- Intel UHD-class Graphics on Core i3 and Celeron/Pentium units
- No discrete GPU option
Memory (RAM)
- DDR4-3200
- Factory options of 8GB, 12GB, or 16GB
- A second SO-DIMM slot is present and functional, so memory can be upgraded (commonly to 16–32GB), though some configurations ship single-channel from the factory
Storage
- M.2 PCIe NVMe Solid State Drive (SSD), or a 1TB 5400 rpm SATA hard drive on some trims
- Factory SSD capacities of 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB
- An SSD-only unit quotes higher than an HDD-equipped one
AMD configurations — 17-cp0 (2021)
Processor (CPU)
- AMD Ryzen 3 5300U — 4 cores, 8 threads, up to 3.8 GHz
- AMD Ryzen 5 5500U — 6 cores, 12 threads, up to 4.0 GHz, 8MB cache
- AMD Ryzen 7 5700U — 8 cores, 16 threads, up to 4.3 GHz
Graphics (GPU)
- AMD Radeon Graphics (Vega-based, integrated)
- No discrete GPU option
Memory (RAM)
- DDR4-3200
- Factory options of 8GB, 12GB, or 16GB
- A second SO-DIMM slot is present and functional, so memory can be upgraded (commonly to 16–32GB)
Storage
- M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD, or a 1TB 5400 rpm SATA hard drive, or SSD + HDD dual storage
- Factory SSD capacities of 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB
- A few low-end AMD 17z units even shipped with a DVD writer — uncommon for this generation
A note on storage, RAM, and Wi-Fi when quoting: the 2021 units have a second SO-DIMM slot, so the memory can be expanded and listings advertising more than the factory amount reflect upgrades the hardware supports. Two things specific to this year affect value: some units shipped with a slower 5400 rpm hard drive (or an HDD paired with a small SSD) instead of a single fast SSD, and most 2021 units use Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac, sometimes 1×1) with Bluetooth 4.2 rather than Wi-Fi 6. Select the storage type, memory, and capacities your laptop currently reports in Windows when quoting.
Display & audio
Display
17.3-inch anti-glare LED-backlit BrightView display at 60Hz, 250 nits. Three panel tiers appeared in 2021: FHD (1920 × 1080) IPS, HD+ (1600 × 900) SVA/TN (touch optional), and on some entry trims an HD (1366 × 768) panel. The FHD IPS option offers the widest viewing angles and is the most desirable of the three.
Audio
Dual stereo speakers with integrated dual-array digital microphones for clearer calls and voice capture.
Ports & connectivity
The 2021 redesign added a USB-C port and charges via an AC smart-pin barrel jack. Port layout is the same on Intel and AMD units.
- 1× USB-C (SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1, 5Gbps, with DisplayPort. No Thunderbolt.)
- 1× HDMI 1.4b
- 1× AC smart-pin power jack (DC-in)
- 2× USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 SuperSpeed (5Gbps)
- 1× SD/microSD media card reader (varies by trim)
- 1× 3.5mm headphone/microphone combo jack
Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) Bluetooth 4.2 / 5.x
