The Apple MacBook Pro (2023) is not one laptop — it is two separate waves of Apple's flagship pro notebook, released ten months apart in both 14-inch and 16-inch sizes. The Early 2023 wave arrived on January 24, 2023 with the M2 Pro and M2 Max chips (model numbers A2779 for the 14-inch and A2780 for the 16-inch). The Late 2023 wave followed on November 7, 2023 with the M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max chips (A2918 and A2992 for the 14-inch, A2991 for the 16-inch), adding an entry-level 14-inch M3 that replaced the old 13-inch MacBook Pro, plus the new Space Black finish. Every one of them shares the same Liquid Retina XDR chassis with MagSafe 3, HDMI, and a full-size SD card slot. Because the chip, the memory, and the SSD were all chosen once at checkout and soldered permanently to the logic board, your exact configuration — not the model year — is what sets the resale value. Select your screen size, chip, storage, and memory in the tool above to see an instant cash offer for your specific machine.
New to device buyback? Gadget Salvation has been buying used electronics directly from consumers since 2008. We are not a marketplace and not a consignment shop: we buy your MacBook Pro outright for cash. You get an instant quote here, a free insured prepaid shipping label, and payment within two business days of inspection — no listings, no buyer messages, no seller fees, and no waiting for someone to make an offer. See exactly how the process works, or read our breakdown of selling a used MacBook Pro online versus in person.
Identify your exact 2023 MacBook Pro before you quote
You do not need to open anything or read any tiny print. Click the Apple menu () in the top-left corner of your screen and choose About This Mac. That single window tells you the chip name and the model line — for example "MacBook Pro (14-inch, 2023)" for the Early 2023 wave, or "MacBook Pro (16-inch, Nov 2023)" for the Late 2023 wave. If the Mac will not power on, flip it over: the model number is laser-etched on the underside in the format A2779, A2780, A2918, A2992, or A2991.
Early 2023 — M2 generation
- 14-inch: Model A2779 · Identifiers Mac14,9 (M2 Pro) and Mac14,5 (M2 Max)
- 16-inch: Model A2780 · Identifiers Mac14,10 (M2 Pro) and Mac14,6 (M2 Max)
- Part numbers begin MPHE3, MPHF3, MPHG3, MPHH3, MPHJ3, MPHK3 (14-inch) or MNW83, MNW93, MNWC3, MNWD3, MNWF3, MNWG3, MNWJ3, MNWK3 (16-inch)
- Finish tell: Silver or Space Gray only — Space Black did not exist yet
Late 2023 — M3 generation
- 14-inch M3: Model A2918 · Identifier Mac15,3 · Silver or Space Gray
- 14-inch M3 Pro / M3 Max: Model A2992 · Identifiers Mac15,6, Mac15,8, Mac15,10 · Silver or Space Black
- 16-inch M3 Pro / M3 Max: Model A2991 · Identifiers Mac15,7, Mac15,9, Mac15,11 · Silver or Space Black
- Part numbers begin MR7J3, MR7K3, MRX2, MTL73, MTL83, MTLC3, MXE0, MXE1 (14-inch M3); FRX3–FRX8 or MRX3–MRX8 (14-inch Pro/Max); FRW1–FRW7, FUW6, FUW7, or MRW1–MRW7 (16-inch)
Three fast visual tells if you are not sure which wave you have: a Space Black finish means Late 2023 M3 Pro or M3 Max, full stop. A chip reading M2 Pro or M2 Max means Early 2023; anything in the M3 family means Late 2023. And if your 14-inch has only two USB-C ports instead of three, you have the entry-level 14-inch M3 (A2918) — that is the single most reliable spec tell in the whole lineup. For step-by-step screenshots, see our guide on how to identify which MacBook Pro you have or our general find your gadget's model page.
Models that look almost identical but do not belong on this page
- MacBook Pro 14-inch / 16-inch (M1 Pro or M1 Max, 2021) — models A2442 and A2485, identifiers MacBookPro18,1 through MacBookPro18,4. Externally indistinguishable from the 2023 machines: same chassis, same notch, same ports, same colors. The only reliable difference is the chip name in About This Mac. Quoting a 2021 unit here will misprice it.
- MacBook Pro 13-inch (M2, 2022) — model A2338, identifier Mac14,7. This one still has a Touch Bar, a 13.3-inch standard Retina screen (not XDR), only two Thunderbolt ports, and no HDMI or SD slot. It has its own page under MacBook Pro trade-in.
- MacBook Air (M2, 2023, 15-inch) — also an Apple silicon 2023 notebook, but it has no HDMI port, no SD card slot, no XDR display, and no fans. If your machine lacks the HDMI and SD slot, it is an Air. Quote it under MacBook Air.
- Later Space Black MacBook Pro models — Apple kept this exact chassis and the Space Black finish for generations after the M3 family. Space Black alone does not prove a 2023 build. If About This Mac reports a chip newer than M3 Max, this is the wrong page; use the MacBook Pro category to find the right year.

Display & audio
Display
Liquid Retina XDR mini-LED panel with a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio and ProMotion adaptive refresh up to 120Hz. The 14-inch runs 3024 × 1964 at 254 ppi; the 16-inch runs 3456 × 2234, also at 254 ppi. Both hit 1000 nits sustained full-screen and 1600 nits peak for HDR content, with 1 billion colors, P3 wide color, and True Tone. One asymmetry between the waves: Early 2023 tops out at 500 nits for standard (SDR) content, while Late 2023 raised that to 600 nits.
Audio
High-fidelity six-speaker system with force-cancelling woofers and wide stereo sound. Supports Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos on the built-in speakers, plus dynamic head tracking with compatible AirPods. Studio-quality three-microphone array with directional beamforming. The 3.5mm jack includes advanced support for high-impedance headphones.
Ports & connectivity
This is a genuine pro port layout: HDMI and a full-size SD card slot are both present, and MagSafe 3 keeps charging off the USB-C ports so you can drive displays and drives while the machine charges.
- 1× MagSafe 3 charging port
- Thunderbolt / USB-C ports (count varies by model — see the note below)
- 1× 3.5mm headphone jack (high-impedance headphone support)
- 1× SDXC card slot
- 1× HDMI port (8K at 60Hz or 4K at 240Hz on all Pro and Max chips; 4K at 120Hz on the entry M3)
- Additional Thunderbolt / USB-C port
The Thunderbolt count is the key asymmetry. Every 2023 MacBook Pro has three Thunderbolt 4 ports — except the entry-level 14-inch M3 (A2918), which has only two Thunderbolt / USB 4 ports running at Thunderbolt 3 speeds. Count your USB-C ports before you quote; two ports on a 14-inch means the base M3, which sits in a different value tier than everything else on this page.
Not present on any 2023 MacBook Pro: no Ethernet jack, no USB-A ports, no Face ID, and no Touch Bar — the physical function-key row and Touch ID button replaced it. There is also no cellular option and no user-accessible expansion of any kind.
Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax) Bluetooth 5.3 Touch ID MagSafe 3
Battery, build & more
Battery & charging
The 16-inch uses a 100Wh battery (99.6Wh actual) in both waves and ships with a 140W adapter that supports fast charging. The 14-inch varies: Early 2023 and the entry M3 use 70Wh (69.6Wh actual), while the Late 2023 M3 Pro and M3 Max use a slightly larger 72.4Wh pack. Adapters run 67W or 96W (Early 2023 14-inch), 70W (entry M3), or 70W / 96W (Late 2023 14-inch Pro and Max). All charge over MagSafe 3 or over USB-C.
Camera & mic
1080p FaceTime HD camera housed in the display notch, paired with an advanced image signal processor. Studio-quality three-mic array with a high signal-to-noise ratio. There is no Face ID — authentication is handled by the Touch ID button on the keyboard.
Keyboard & trackpad
Backlit Magic Keyboard with 78 U.S. keys (79 ISO), including a full-height physical function row and an ambient light sensor. Touch ID sits at the top right. Large Force Touch trackpad with pressure sensing, Force clicks, and Multi-Touch gestures.
Finish
Early 2023 (all) and the entry Late 2023 M3: Silver or Space Gray. Late 2023 M3 Pro and M3 Max: Silver or Space Black, a darker anodization with a fingerprint-resistant coating. Color is a genuinely useful identification shortcut — Space Black narrows you to one wave and two chips immediately.
Weight
14-inch: 3.4 lb (1.55 kg) for M3; 3.5 lb (1.60–1.61 kg) for M2 Pro and M3 Pro; 3.6 lb (1.62–1.63 kg) for M2 Max and M3 Max. 16-inch: 4.7 lb (2.15 kg) for Pro chips; 4.8 lb (2.16 kg) for Max chips.
Dimensions
14-inch: 0.61 × 12.31 × 8.71 in (1.55 × 31.26 × 22.12 cm). 16-inch: 0.66 × 14.01 × 9.77 in (1.68 × 35.57 × 24.81 cm). Both waves share identical enclosures within each screen size.
How the Gadget Salvation MacBook Pro trade-in works
Most people selling a laptop think their only options are a marketplace listing or a store-credit trade-in. There is a third option, and it is the one we have run since 2008: a straight cash buyback. Here is the whole process.
- Get an instant quote. Pick your screen size, chip, storage, memory, and condition in the tool at the top of this page. The price you see is the price we have committed to, not an opening bid.
- Ship it free. We email a prepaid, fully insured UPS label. You box the MacBook Pro and drop it off — you never pay for shipping or insurance. See our packing and shipping instructions for how to protect the screen in transit.
- We inspect and pay. Our technicians verify the configuration and condition, then release payment within two business days by PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, CashApp, or a mailed company check.
- Your data is destroyed. Every incoming drive goes through certified sanitization. Details are on our data erasure protocols page.
No listing fees, no final-value fees, no payment-processing cut, no meeting strangers in parking lots, and no chargeback risk weeks after the sale. If you want to see how this stacks up against the alternatives, our blog compares where to sell a MacBook Pro for cash and explains how Apple Trade In works online — worth reading, because Apple pays in store credit rather than cash. Selling more than one machine, or clearing out a studio or classroom? Use bulk selling, corporate device buyback, or school device buyback. If your configuration is unusual, request a custom quote.
