The ASUS ROG Strix G731 series, released in 2019, is the 17.3-inch generation of ROG's Strix lineup and spans three closely related editions built on the exact same chassis code: the ROG Strix G (G731GT / G731GU, also sold as GL731GT / GL731GU), the ROG Strix Hero III (G731GV), and the flagship ROG Strix Scar III (G731GW). Co-designed with BMW Designworks, every G731 pairs a 9th-generation Intel Core processor with dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GTX 16-series or RTX 20-series graphics, wrapped in a brushed-metal deck with a signature wraparound RGB light bar. If this laptop has been sitting unused since your last upgrade, you can trade it in for cash online — simply select your exact processor, graphics card, and storage in the quote tool above to see an instant offer, a service many owners of older gaming laptops don't realize exists.

Which G731 do you have?

Confirming it's a G731

  • Flip the laptop over: the label on the bottom panel reads G731Gx or GL731Gx (the final letter — T, U, V, or W — identifies your graphics tier)
  • The last letter maps directly to the GPU: GT = GTX 1650, GU = GTX 1660 Ti, GV = RTX 2060, GW = RTX 2070
  • Screen measures 17.3 inches diagonally, with a wraparound RGB light bar glowing along the front lip and both side edges
  • Scar III and Hero III units include a removable Keystone — a small magnetic NFC key that docks into a slot on the right side of the chassis

Easy to confuse with

  • ROG Strix G531 / GL531 — the 15.6-inch sibling from the same year; identical styling, smaller screen. Measure your display: 17.3" = G731, 15.6" = G531
  • ROG Strix G17 (G712) — the 2020 successor with 10th-gen Intel CPUs (i7-10750H and similar). If your processor starts with "10," you own a G712, not a G731
  • ROG Strix Scar II (GL704) — the 2018–2019 predecessor; it has a built-in webcam above the screen, which no G731 has
  • The fastest check: your CPU should be a 9th-gen chip (i5-9300H, i7-9750H, or i9-9880H). See our guide to finding your processor type — it only takes a few clicks in Windows

Display & audio

Display

All G731 laptops use a 17.3-inch anti-glare Full HD (1920 × 1080) IPS-level panel with slim three-sided bezels, but the refresh rate identifies your edition: base Strix G units shipped at 60Hz or 120Hz, mid-tier configurations at 144Hz, and the Scar III G731GW at a fast 240Hz with 3ms response time and 100% sRGB color coverage. Your refresh rate is listed under Windows Display Settings → Advanced display.

Audio

Two side-firing speakers with smart-amplifier technology, supported by ROG's Sonic Studio III software for virtual surround and voice-clarity profiles. There is no built-in webcam on any G731 — audio input comes solely from the integrated array microphone.

Ports & connectivity

The G731 routes its heaviest cables — power, HDMI, and Ethernet — out of the rear exhaust shelf, keeping the sides clear for peripherals.

Rear
  • 1× USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 with DisplayPort 1.4 output (no Thunderbolt 3 on any configuration)
  • 1× HDMI 2.0b
  • 1× RJ-45 Gigabit Ethernet
  • 1× Power adapter input (DC-in)
Left & Right Side
  • 3× USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 ports (all on the left edge)
  • 1× 3.5mm headphone/microphone combo jack
  • 1× Keystone NFC dock on the right edge (Scar III and Hero III only)
  • No SD card reader and no webcam on any G731 model

Intel Wireless-AC 9560 (Wi-Fi 5) Bluetooth 5.0 Gigabit Ethernet

Battery, build & more

Battery & charging

A 66Wh 4-cell battery is standard across the series. Chargers scale with the graphics card: GTX 1650/1660 Ti units ship with a 180W adapter, while RTX 2060/2070 configurations use a 230W brick. Barrel-plug charging only — the USB-C port does not accept power.

Keyboard & lighting

Full-size chiclet keyboard with number pad, dedicated hotkey row, and N-key rollover. Strix G units use 4-zone RGB backlighting, while the Scar III and Hero III step up to per-key RGB — all synchronized with the wraparound underglow light bar through Aura Sync in Armoury Crate.

Cooling

Intelligent Cooling with dual n-Blade fans, anti-dust self-cleaning tunnels, and a triple-radiator heatsink layout exhausting through the rear and sides. Scenario Profiles automatically switch between Silent, Performance, and Turbo fan modes.

Keystone (Scar III / Hero III)

The magnetic Keystone NFC key unlocks a hidden Shadow Drive partition and loads personalized lighting and performance profiles when docked. A missing Keystone doesn't stop the laptop from working, but including it with your trade-in keeps the unit complete.

Weight

≈ 2.85 kg (6.28 lb) across all configurations.

Dimensions

399.9 × 293.4 × 25.7–26.4 mm (15.7" × 11.6" × 1.0"–1.04").

Frequently asked questions

01 How do I find my exact G731 model number to get an accurate quote?
The simplest method requires no tools: turn the laptop over and read the white label on the bottom panel — it lists the full model, such as "G731GW" or "GL731GT." If the label is worn, press the Windows key, type "System Information," and press Enter; the "System Model" line shows the same code. The final letter tells us your graphics card (GT = GTX 1650, GU = GTX 1660 Ti, GV = RTX 2060, GW = RTX 2070), which is the biggest factor in your offer. For step-by-step screenshots, see our guide to finding your ASUS laptop's model number.
02 My laptop says "Strix Scar III" — is that still a G731, or a different model?
If it's the 17.3-inch version, yes — the Strix Scar III (G731GW) and Strix Hero III (G731GV) are premium editions of this same G731 platform, so you're on the right page. Two lookalikes are not covered here, though: the 15.6-inch Strix G531/Scar III (same design, smaller screen — measure your display to be sure) and the 2020 ROG Strix G17 G712, which upgraded to 10th-gen Intel processors. Check your CPU in System Information: a 9th-gen chip like the i7-9750H confirms a G731, while an i7-10750H means you should quote a G712 instead. When in doubt, browse all models on our ASUS ROG sell page.
03 Can I sell a Strix G731 with a cracked screen, dead battery, or missing Keystone?
Yes. We buy G731 laptops in every working state — cracked or dim displays, batteries that no longer hold a charge, noisy or failing fans, broken RGB lighting, worn keyboards, and cosmetic damage are all fine. Simply describe the condition honestly in the quote tool above and the offer adjusts automatically. A missing Keystone on Scar III or Hero III units is not a deal-breaker either. Even a laptop that won't power on can still have trade-in value thanks to its GPU and other components.
04 How does trading in my ROG Strix G731 online actually work?
Many people don't realize they can sell a used gaming laptop online for cash without listing it on a marketplace, haggling with strangers, or paying seller fees. Here's how it works: select your G731's configuration and condition above to lock in an instant offer, ship it to us for free with the prepaid, insured label we email you, and get paid within two business days of our inspection via PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, or check. Full packing tips are on our shipping instructions page, and if you're weighing whether to sell or upgrade, our blog's roundup of the best ASUS ROG laptops is a good place to see what your trade-in credit could go toward.
05 Do I need to wipe my data or remove the SSD before shipping?
Back up your files and game saves to an external drive or the cloud, then sign out of your accounts — Windows, Steam, Epic, Battle.net, and any others — before packing. You don't need to open the laptop or remove the M.2 SSD (or the SSHD, if your unit has one); our technicians perform a certified data wipe on every incoming drive as standard procedure. If you own a Scar III or Hero III, remember that files saved to the Keystone's hidden Shadow Drive live on the laptop's storage, so back those up too. Details are on our data erasure protocols page.
