The ASUS ROG Strix GL502 series, produced from mid-2016 through 2017, is the original 15.6-inch generation of ROG's Strix gaming line and covers six model numbers built on one shared chassis: the GL502VT (GeForce GTX 970M) and GL502VY (GTX 980M) from the first half of 2016, the GL502VM (GTX 1060) and GL502VS (GTX 1070) from late 2016, and their 2017 Kaby Lake refreshes, the GL502VMK and GL502VSK. All of them pair a quad-core Intel Core processor — 6th-gen i7-6700HQ in the originals, 7th-gen i7-7700HQ in the K refreshes — with dedicated NVIDIA graphics in a slim brushed-metal lid design, finished with the era's signature orange or red accents. Since the graphics card alone spans two full GPU generations, your exact configuration matters a great deal to resale value — and if this laptop has been retired to a shelf, you can trade it in for cash online by selecting your components in the quote tool above, an option many owners of older gaming laptops still don't know exists.
Which GL502 do you have?
Confirming it's a GL502
- Flip the laptop over: the label on the bottom panel reads GL502Vx — the final letters identify your graphics tier
- The suffix maps directly to the GPU: VT = GTX 970M, VY = GTX 980M, VM / VMK = GTX 1060, VS / VSK = GTX 1070
- No label? Press the Windows key, type "System Information," and press Enter — the "System Model" line shows the same code
- Visual cues: a 15.6-inch matte screen, a brushed-metal lid with the ROG logo, and orange accent trim on the GL502VT or red trim on the VY/VM/VS models
Easy to confuse with
- ASUS FX502 — a budget lookalike sold alongside the GL502 with nearly identical styling; the bottom label says FX502, not GL502, and it should be quoted separately
- ROG Strix GL503 (Hero / Scar Edition) — the 2017–2018 successor with 8th-gen Intel CPUs and RGB keyboard lighting; the GL502's backlight is red only
- ROG Strix GL702 — the 17.3-inch sibling; measure your screen diagonally to be sure (15.6" = GL502)
- Not sure which processor generation you have? A CPU model starting with "6" (i7-6700HQ) means a 2016 original; "7" (i7-7700HQ) means a 2017 K refresh. Our guide to finding your processor type shows where to look in a few clicks
Core hardware configurations
Processor (CPU)
- Intel Core i7-6700HQ — 4 cores, 8 threads, up to 3.5 GHz boost (2016 GL502VT / VY / VM / VS)
- Intel Core i7-7700HQ — 4 cores, 8 threads, up to 3.8 GHz boost (2017 GL502VMK / VSK and late VM / VS units)
- Intel Core i5-7300HQ — 4 cores, 4 threads (select international GL502VM configurations)
Graphics (GPU)
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M — 3GB or 6GB GDDR5 (GL502VT)
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M — 4GB or 8GB GDDR5 (GL502VY)
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 — 6GB GDDR5, 3GB on some international units (GL502VM / VMK)
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 — 8GB GDDR5 (GL502VS / VSK)
- The Maxwell-to-Pascal jump is huge: a GTX 1070 unit performs in an entirely different class than a 970M unit, and quotes reflect that
Memory (RAM)
- DDR4-2133/2400 memory
- Factory configurations shipped with 8GB, 12GB, or 16GB
- 8GB is soldered to the motherboard with a single accessible SO-DIMM slot for upgrades — check your installed total in Task Manager before quoting, as many units were upgraded by a previous owner
Storage
- Dual-drive layout on most units: an M.2 SSD boot drive plus a 2.5-inch 1TB hard drive (7200 RPM)
- Factory SSD capacities of 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB — SATA on entry units, faster PCIe NVMe on higher trims
- Some entry configurations shipped with the 1TB hard drive only
Display & audio
Display
Every GL502 uses a 15.6-inch anti-glare Full HD (1920 × 1080) panel, but the details vary by model: the GL502VT and VY use a wide-viewing-angle IPS panel at 60Hz, the GL502VM adds NVIDIA G-Sync at 60Hz, and the GL502VS/VSK was one of the first gaming laptops offered with a fast 120Hz G-Sync panel. Check yours under Windows Display Settings → Advanced display.
Audio
Stereo speakers tuned with ASUS SonicMaster and ROG AudioWizard profiles, plus a built-in array microphone and an HD (720p) webcam above the display — a feature ASUS later removed from the Strix line, so its presence actually helps confirm you own a GL502-era machine.
Ports & connectivity
The GL502 keeps its front edges clear, spreading ports along the left and right sides.
- 1× USB-C port (Thunderbolt 3 on the GL502VM/VMK only; standard USB 3.1 on VT, VY, VS, and VSK)
- 1× Mini DisplayPort
- 1× HDMI
- 1× RJ-45 Gigabit Ethernet
- 1× USB-A 3.0 port
- 1× Power adapter input (DC-in)
- 2× USB-A 3.0 ports
- 1× SD card reader
- 1× 3.5mm headphone/microphone combo jack
- 1× Kensington lock slot
802.11ac Wi-Fi (Wi-Fi 5) Bluetooth 4.1 Gigabit Ethernet
Battery, build & more
Battery & charging
A 64Wh 4-cell battery is standard, with barrel-plug chargers that scale from 120W up to a 230W brick on GTX 1070 units — USB-C charging is not supported on any model. The GL502VT is the only version with NVIDIA Optimus graphics switching, giving it noticeably longer unplugged runtimes; the G-Sync models (VM/VS) keep the dedicated GPU always active.
Keyboard
Full-size red-backlit chiclet keyboard with a number pad and highlighted WASD cluster. Backlighting is single-color red on every GL502 — there is no RGB lighting and no light bar, both of which arrived with later Strix generations.
Cooling
Dual-fan, copper heat-pipe cooling exhausting through the rear vents, with independent thermal paths for CPU and GPU. Fan behavior is managed through ASUS ROG Gaming Center software.
Build & design
Brushed aluminum lid over a plastic deck patterned to match, in Black with orange accents (GL502VT) or red accents (VY/VM/VS). No fingerprint reader, no IR camera, and no optical drive on any configuration.
Weight
≈ 2.2–2.3 kg (4.8–5.1 lb) depending on configuration.
Dimensions
390 × 266 × 23.5–30.1 mm (15.3" × 10.5" × 0.9"–1.2") — the GTX 1070-equipped VS is the thickest of the family.
