Looking to sell your ASUS ROG Strix Scar III / Hero III (G531) for cash? You're in the right place — and if you didn't know Gadget Salvation buys gaming laptops outright, our gaming laptop trade-in service pays you directly instead of forcing you to list, haggle, and ship to a stranger. This page covers the premium 2019 tier of the 15.6-inch G531 family — the G531GV (NVIDIA RTX 2060) and G531GW (NVIDIA RTX 2070), sold as the ROG Strix Scar III (and the closely related Strix Hero III variant). These are the RTX-powered, 240Hz-panel, Keystone-equipped flagships of the line. Because ASUS sold many SKUs under these codes with different CPUs, memory, and storage, your exact model code and configuration set the final resale price. Note: this is not the mainstream GTX-based Strix G tier (the GTX 1650 G531GT and GTX 1660 Ti G531GU), which quotes on a separate page, and it is not the 17-inch G731 Scar III. Confirm your model code below, then select your components using our tool above to view an instant cash offer.

Which Scar III / Hero III (G531) do you have?

The full model code is on the bottom cover, starting with G531 (some regions prefix it GL531). The two letters after the number identify the GPU tier. Scar III and Hero III share the same chassis and internals — the difference is largely branding and keyboard/lighting trim, so both are covered here:

G531GV — RTX 2060

NVIDIA RTX 2060 (6GB GDDR6) with real ray-tracing, Core i7-9750H, and the 240Hz Full HD panel. Sold as Strix Scar III (and Hero III on some SKUs).

G531GW — RTX 2070

NVIDIA RTX 2070 (8GB GDDR6), Core i7-9750H or the 8-core i9-9880H, and the 240Hz panel. The top tier — Strix Scar III, with Hero III branding on select ES-suffix SKUs.

Core hardware configurations

Processor (CPU)

  • Intel Core i7-9750H — 6 cores / 12 threads, up to 4.5 GHz
  • Intel Core i9-9880H — 8 cores / 16 threads, up to 4.8 GHz (top G531GW SKUs)
  • 9th-gen Intel "Coffee Lake" H-series (45W)

Graphics (GPU)

  • G531GV: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 — 6GB GDDR6
  • G531GW: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 — 8GB GDDR6 (non-Max-Q)
  • RTX (Turing) graphics with hardware ray-tracing. GPU tier is the biggest value driver

Memory (RAM)

  • DDR4-2666 across two SO-DIMM slots — user-upgradable to 32GB
  • Single-channel caveat: some SKUs shipped with one 16GB stick (single-channel), which measurably reduces gaming performance. Adding a matched second stick restores dual-channel

Storage

  • M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD — commonly 512GB or 1TB
  • Many SKUs add a 2.5" SATA HDD or FireCuda SSHD in a second bay for extra capacity
  • Both the M.2 slot and the 2.5" bay are user-accessible

Display & audio

Display

15.6-inch Full HD (1920×1080) 16:9 IPS-level anti-glare panel with a fast 240Hz refresh rate and 3ms response — the signature feature of this tier, aimed at competitive esports. Roughly sRGB-wide gamut with ~285 nits brightness. No touchscreen.

Audio

Side-firing stereo speakers (2× 3.5W) tuned for gaming — noticeably fuller than the mainstream Strix G tier, with clear, loud output for movies and games.

Ports & connectivity

Ports are front- and left-biased to keep the mouse hand clear. This tier includes USB-C and the ROG Keystone bay — but note there is no card reader.

Left Side
  • 1× RJ-45 Gigabit Ethernet
  • 1× HDMI 2.0b
  • 3× USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A
  • 1× USB-C (USB 3.2 Gen 1, DisplayPort support)
  • 1× 3.5mm combo audio jack
  • 1× DC-in power jack
Right Side & Extras
  • 1× ROG Keystone bay (NFC key that unlocks the hidden "Shadow Drive" partition — see FAQ)
  • No webcam — the G531 line ships without an integrated camera; normal for the model, not a defect
  • No SD/microSD card reader

Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) RangeBoost Bluetooth 5.0 Gigabit LAN

Battery, build & more

Battery & charging

66Wh 4-cell lithium-ion battery, charged via a barrel-plug adapter (typically 230W on RTX 2070 units, 180W on RTX 2060 units). Battery life is short under load, as expected for an RTX-class 2019 gaming laptop.

ROG Keystone

An amber NFC key that docks in the chassis. It launches Armoury Crate, loads personalized profiles, and can unlock a hidden "Shadow Drive" storage partition. If you still have the Keystone, include it — a complete unit is more appealing to buyers.

Keyboard & lighting

Backlit chiclet RGB keyboard with Aura Sync and the wraparound light bar. Dedicated left/right trackpad click buttons and a numpad-overlay on the trackpad. Hero III trim emphasizes the MOBA/FPS key layout.

Build & cooling

Gunmetal chassis (BMW Designworks-influenced 3D Flow Zone) with dual n-Blade fans, 83-blade design, and a self-cleaning anti-dust module. Weighs about 2.4 kg (5.3 lb).

Operating system

Shipped with Windows 10 Home or Pro; most units are eligible for the free Windows 11 upgrade where hardware requirements are met.

Weight & size

≈ 2.4 kg (5.3 lb); 36.0 × 27.5 × 2.6 cm. A slim-for-its-class 15.6-inch desktop replacement.

Frequently asked questions

01 How do I confirm I have the Scar III / Hero III (G531GV/GW) and not the base Strix G?
Flip the laptop over and read the model code on the bottom cover. It starts with G531 (or GL531). The two letters after the number are the key: GV means RTX 2060 and GW means RTX 2070 — both are this Scar III / Hero III tier. If instead you see GT (GTX 1650) or GU (GTX 1660 Ti), you have the mainstream Strix G, which quotes on a separate page. A quick physical tell: this tier has the 240Hz panel and the amber ROG Keystone slot on the right side. Our ASUS model-number guide shows exactly where to find the code.
02 Do I need the ROG Keystone to sell it, and what about the Shadow Drive?
You can still sell the laptop without the Keystone, but including it makes for a more complete, more appealing unit. Before you ship, make sure any files stored on the hidden Shadow Drive partition are backed up and that the drive is unlocked, then unpair the Keystone from your account in Armoury Crate so the new owner can set it up fresh. If you've misplaced the Keystone, just note that in your listing details — it doesn't block a quote.
03 Should I wipe or remove my SSD and HDD before shipping?
We recommend backing up your games, saves, and personal files — including anything on the Keystone Shadow Drive — to an external drive or the cloud, then signing out of your Microsoft account before boxing the laptop. You do not need to open the chassis or pull the M.2 SSD or 2.5" drive yourself — our technicians run certified, multi-pass data sanitation on every incoming drive. Full details are on our data erasure protocols page.
04 How does the Gadget Salvation trade-in work, and which specs raise my Scar III's value?
A lot of sellers don't realize there's an alternative to marketplace listings and lowball offers — Gadget Salvation is a dedicated trade-in service that quotes you instantly, ships a free prepaid label, and pays you fast once your laptop is verified. On this tier, the GPU drives value most: a G531GW with the RTX 2070 commands a stronger payout than a G531GV with the RTX 2060. The 8-core i9-9880H over the i7, a full 32GB of dual-channel RAM, and a larger 1TB SSD all lift the final figure. New to selling laptops online? Our first-time seller's guide walks through the whole process.
05 How and when do I get paid?
Once your ROG Strix Scar III arrives at our facility and passes functional testing, payment is approved within about two business days. You can be paid by PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, or CashApp, or by a physical check mailed to you. Shipping to us is always free and fully insured with a prepaid label. Want the step-by-step first?
