The ASUS TUF Gaming A17 is the 17.3-inch, AMD-powered member of the budget-friendly, military-grade (MIL-STD-810H) TUF Gaming family, produced across four annual generations from 2020 through 2023. The two earliest generations share the chassis code FA706 — the 2020 original (AMD Ryzen 4000 with GTX/RTX 20-series graphics) and the 2021 refresh (Ryzen 5000 with RTX 30-series graphics). The two later generations use the chassis code FA707 — the 2022 model (Ryzen 6000, RTX 30-series, and a MUX switch) and the 2023 model (Ryzen 7000, RTX 40-series, and USB4). Because each generation carries a very different processor, graphics card, and feature set — and therefore a very different resale value — pinpointing your exact model is the single most important step to getting an accurate quote. Many people don't realize you can sell a used gaming laptop like this online for cash instead of letting it gather dust: just select your configuration in the quote tool above to see an instant offer for your exact device.
How to confirm you have a TUF Gaming A17 (and which generation)
✓ You have a TUF Gaming A17 if…
- The model number printed on the sticker on the underside of the laptop begins with FA706 (2020 & 2021) or FA707 (2022 & 2023)
- The screen measures 17.3 inches corner-to-corner
- The processor is an AMD Ryzen chip (check Windows > Settings > System > About)
- The lid and deck carry "TUF" and "TUF Gaming" branding rather than "ROG"
✗ It is NOT a TUF Gaming A17 if…
- The processor is Intel — that's the near-identical TUF Gaming F17 (FX707), a different (separately quoted) device
- The model number starts with FA506 or FA507 — that's the smaller 15-inch A15
- The model number starts with FA617 / FA707 "A16" or the screen is 16 inches — that's the newer TUF Gaming A16 or A18 that replaced this line
- The lid says ROG (Republic of Gamers) — those are ASUS's premium models, not TUF
The easiest, no-technical-knowledge way to identify your exact unit: close the lid, flip the laptop over, and read the small printed sticker. You're looking for a code like "FA706IU" or "FA707XI." The first five characters (FA706 or FA707) tell us the chassis, and the letters after that pin down the exact graphics and processor combination. If you can't read the sticker, open Settings > System > About in Windows and note the processor name — the Ryzen model number alone usually tells us the generation. Our step-by-step guide to finding your ASUS laptop model number walks through both methods with pictures.
Generation quick reference
Use the processor and graphics card in your unit to place it in the right year. This is the fastest way to avoid confusing one generation with another, since all four look almost identical from the outside.
- 2020 — FA706 (original): AMD Ryzen 4000-series (e.g. Ryzen 5 4600H, Ryzen 7 4800H, Ryzen 9 4900H) with NVIDIA GTX 1650 / GTX 1660 Ti / RTX 2060 graphics. Screens up to 144Hz. No MUX switch.
- 2021 — FA706 (refresh): AMD Ryzen 5000-series (e.g. Ryzen 5 5600H, Ryzen 7 5800H, Ryzen 9 5900HX) with NVIDIA RTX 3050 / RTX 3060 / RTX 3070 graphics. Same FA706 chassis code as 2020, so the processor is your tell-tale.
- 2022 — FA707R*: AMD Ryzen 6000-series (e.g. Ryzen 7 6800H) with RTX 3050 through RTX 3070 Ti, DDR5 memory, a redesigned (4.5% smaller) chassis, and a dedicated MUX switch. Model codes: FA707RC, FA707RE, FA707RW, FA707RM, FA707RR.
- 2023 — FA707N* / FA707X*: AMD Ryzen 7000-series (Ryzen 5 7535HS, Ryzen 7 7735HS / 7845HX, Ryzen 9 7940HS) with RTX 40-series (RTX 4050 / 4060 / 4070), USB4, and optional QHD 240Hz displays. Model codes include FA707NU, FA707NV, FA707XI, FA707XV.

Display & audio
Display
Every generation uses a 17.3-inch 16:9 anti-glare IPS-level panel. The 2020 and 2021 models offered FHD (1920×1080) at 60Hz, 120Hz, or 144Hz. The 2022 model standardized on FHD 144Hz with Adaptive-Sync. The 2023 model added higher-end options up to QHD (2560×1440) at 240Hz with G-SYNC — a meaningfully more valuable panel, so note which resolution and refresh rate your screen has.
Audio
Dual downward-firing speakers with DTS (earlier generations) or Dolby Atmos (2022–2023), plus Two-Way AI Noise Cancelation on the later models for clearer voice chat.
Ports & connectivity
The port layout is generous thanks to the roomy 17-inch chassis, though the exact USB-C capability changed by generation.
- 1× USB-C (USB 3.2 Gen 2 on 2020/2021; USB4 with DisplayPort on 2023 — earlier models do NOT support Thunderbolt)
- 1× HDMI (2.0b on early models, 2.1 on 2023)
- 1× RJ-45 Gigabit Ethernet
- 1× DC power input
- 2× USB-A 3.2 Gen 1
- 1× 3.5mm headphone / mic combo jack
- No SD / microSD card reader on any generation
- No Thunderbolt and no webcam on the earliest units (see below)
Wi-Fi 5 (2020) → Wi-Fi 6 (2021–2023) Bluetooth 5.0–5.2 Gigabit Ethernet
Battery, build & more
Battery & charging
A large 90Wh battery features on most configurations (a smaller 48Wh battery shipped on some entry GTX 1650 units). Charging is via a barrel-plug adapter — typically 150W, 180W, or 240W depending on the graphics card. USB-C Power Delivery for lighter charging was added on the 2023 generation.
Webcam
Important: the 2020 FA706 launched with no built-in webcam. A 720p HD webcam was added starting with the 2021 refresh and is present on the 2022 and 2023 models. If your A17 has no camera above the screen, it's a 2020 unit.
Keyboard
Full-size backlit keyboard with a number pad and highlighted WASD keys. Backlighting is single-zone RGB on early models and 4-zone RGB (via Armoury Crate) on later ones. Rated for 20-million-press key durability.
Cooling & durability
Dual Arc Flow fans with multiple heatpipes and self-cleaning anti-dust tunnels. Every generation is MIL-STD-810H tested for drops, vibration, and temperature extremes — a core TUF selling point.
Weight
≈ 2.6 kg (5.7 lb) for the 2020/2021 models; ≈ 2.6 kg for the slightly smaller 2022/2023 chassis.
Colors
Sold in variations of Fortress Gray / Graphite Black / Mecha Gray / Jaeger Gray depending on the year.
