The Microsoft Surface Laptop 6, announced March 21, 2024 and released April 9, 2024, is the sixth generation of Microsoft's flagship clamshell — and it's a commercial-only device, sold as "Surface Laptop 6 for Business" and never offered through consumer retail channels. Built on Intel Core Ultra H-series silicon with a dedicated NPU, it comes in 13.5-inch (model 2033) and 15-inch (model 2035) sizes, both wrapped in anodized aluminum with a 3:2 anti-reflective PixelSense touchscreen and a Secured-core PC security stack. Launch pricing started around $1,199 for the 13.5-inch and $1,399 for the 15-inch, climbing past $2,900 for a maxed-out 15-inch. Many people don't realize that a corporate-issued laptop coming off a fleet refresh is worth real cash rather than a spot in a storage closet. Gadget Salvation has bought pre-owned electronics directly from sellers since 2008 — free insured shipping, no listings or haggling, and payment in about two business days. Model identification & look-alike models

Read the label on the bottom (fastest method)

  • Close the lid and turn the laptop over
  • Find the fine print near the rubber foot strips
  • Look for a four-digit number after the word Model
  • 2033 = Surface Laptop 6, 13.5-inch
  • 2035 = Surface Laptop 6, 15-inch
  • The serial number is printed on the same label

Confirm it in Windows

  • Hold the Windows key and press R
  • Type msinfo32 and press Enter
  • System Model should read "Surface Laptop 6"
  • Processor must begin with Intel(R) Core(TM) Ultra 5 or Ultra 7
  • Or open the pre-installed Surface app, which displays the model and serial on its main screen

⚠ The big one: Surface Laptop 7

  • Microsoft launched two different Surface Laptops in 2024, and they are constantly confused
  • The Surface Laptop 6 is the business model with an Intel Core Ultra chip
  • The Surface Laptop 7 (7th Edition) is the consumer Copilot+ model with a Snapdragon X Elite or X Plus ARM chip
  • Model numbers 2036 and 2037 are the Laptop 7, not the Laptop 6
  • Screen size gives it away too: the Laptop 7 small model is 13.8-inch, the Laptop 6 is 13.5-inch

⚠ Other models people mix up

  • Surface Laptop 5 (2022) — processor reads Core i5-1235U or Core i7-1255U. The words "Core Ultra" never appear on a Laptop 5.
  • Surface Laptop Go 3 — 12.4-inch screen, model 2013
  • Surface Laptop Studio 2 — 14.4-inch screen that pulls forward and lies flat over the keyboard
  • Surface Pro 10 — launched the same day for business, but it's a tablet with a detachable keyboard

Step-by-step: find your Microsoft laptop model How to find your processor type

Core hardware

Processor (CPU)

  • Intel Core Ultra 5 135H — 14 cores, 18 threads, up to 4.6 GHz
  • Intel Core Ultra 7 165H — 16 cores, 22 threads, up to 5.0 GHz
  • Both include the Intel AI Boost NPU
  • Only these two chips were ever offered — there is no i5, i7, or Snapdragon version of the Surface Laptop 6
  • Both are 28W H-series parts, not the lower-power U-series found in many rivals

⚠ Graphics is tied to your RAM

  • This is unusual and easy to get wrong on a quote
  • 8GB configurations → Intel Graphics
  • 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB configurations → Intel Arc Graphics
  • There is no discrete NVIDIA or AMD GPU in any configuration
  • So an 8GB unit is worth meaningfully less than a 16GB one — you lose both the memory and the better graphics tier

Memory (RAM) — soldered, not upgradable

  • 8GB LPDDR5, or 16GB / 32GB / 64GB LPDDR5x
  • The RAM is soldered to the motherboard. It cannot be added to or swapped, and there are no accessible memory slots
  • Microsoft's own service documentation treats memory as part of the motherboard module — replacing RAM means replacing the entire board
  • Whatever capacity your laptop shipped with is the capacity it has today

Storage — removable

  • 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB PCIe Gen4 SSD
  • Unlike the RAM, the SSD is user-removable — a deliberate design choice so IT departments can retain drives when retiring fleets
  • If your drive was pulled before you received the laptop, tell us — we still buy it, but the offer changes

Security & software

  • Windows 11 Pro (or Windows 10 Pro, supported but not sold)
  • Hardware TPM 2.0, BitLocker support, Windows 11 Secured-core PC
  • Windows Hello facial recognition with Enhanced Sign-in Security
  • No fingerprint reader on any configuration — sign-in is face or password only

Exterior & colors

  • Anodized aluminum casing throughout
  • Available in Platinum or Black
  • No Alcantara fabric option — unlike earlier Surface Laptops, the palm rest is metal on every unit
  • Enclosure uses at least 25.8% recycled content, EPEAT Gold registered

Display & audio

13.5-inch display (model 2033)

2256 × 1504 PixelSense touchscreen at 201 PPI, 3:2 aspect ratio, 400 nits typical, 1300:1 contrast, 10-point multi-touch, Gorilla Glass 5, individually colour-calibrated with Dolby Vision IQ and anti-reflective coating certified to ISO 9241-307.

15-inch display (model 2035)

2496 × 1664 PixelSense touchscreen — also 201 PPI, so the two sizes are equally sharp, just larger. Same 3:2 ratio, 400 nits, 1300:1 contrast, 10-point touch, Gorilla Glass 5, Dolby Vision IQ, and the same anti-reflective treatment.

Audio & camera

Omnisonic Speakers with Dolby Atmos and dual Studio Mics with voice focus, plus Bluetooth LE Audio support. Above the screen sits a 1080p Full HD Surface Studio Camera with Windows Studio Effects (automatic framing, eye contact, background blur) that doubles as the Windows Hello face-authentication camera.

Ports & connectivity

The port complement is one of the clearest differences between the two sizes — the 15-inch gets a second Thunderbolt port that the 13.5-inch does not have.

13.5-inch (model 2033)
  • 1× USB-C with USB4 / Thunderbolt 4 (charging, data, DisplayPort 2.1, up to one 8K monitor)
  • 1× USB-A 3.1
  • 1× 3.5mm headset jack
  • 1× Surface Connect port
15-inch (model 2035)
  • 2× USB-C with USB4 / Thunderbolt 4 (charging, data, DisplayPort 2.1, up to one 8K monitor)
  • 1× USB-A 3.1
  • 1× 3.5mm headset jack
  • 1× Surface Connect port
  • 1× Integrated smart card reader (rare — see the callout below)

Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax) Bluetooth 5.3 Supports Microsoft Pen Protocol (pen sold separately) No SD or microSD card reader No HDMI port No Ethernet port No fingerprint reader No cellular / 5G option

Battery, build & more

Battery & charging

Both sizes use the same 47 Whr nominal (46 Whr minimum) battery, but rated runtime differs: up to 18.5 hours on the 13.5-inch and up to 19 hours on the 15-inch. Charging is via Surface Connect or USB-C. The included power supply differs by size: 39W on the 13.5-inch, 65W on the 15-inch. Fast charging needs at least a 45W supply, so the bundled 39W brick does not enable it.

⚠ Smart card reader — 15-inch only

This option is far rarer than most sellers assume. It was offered only on the 15-inch, only in Black, only in these four configurations — Ultra 5/16/512, Ultra 7/16/256, Ultra 7/16/512, and Ultra 7/32/512 — and only in the US and Canada. If your unit has one, say so: it's a genuine premium.

Keyboard & touchpad

Full-size backlit QWERTY keyboard with a complete F1–F12 function row and a dedicated Copilot key — the Surface Laptop 6 was among the first Surface machines to ship with one. Standard precision touchpad. Neither size has a number pad, including the 15-inch.

Repairability

Unusually serviceable for a thin laptop, with a built-in QR code on the chassis linking to repair instructions. Officially replaceable parts include the display assembly, keyboard assembly, removable SSD, battery, motherboard module, Surface Connect port, thermal module, audio jack, speakers, enclosure, and feet. A repaired or refurbished unit is still very much sellable.

Size & weight — 13.5-inch

308 × 223 × 16.7 mm (12.1" × 8.8" × 0.66"). Weight 1.38 kg (3.06 lb).

Size & weight — 15-inch

340 × 244 × 16.9 mm (13.4" × 9.6" × 0.67"). Weight 1.68 kg (3.70 lb), or 3.71 lb with the smart card reader.

Frequently asked questions

01 How do I confirm my laptop is a Surface Laptop 6, and which size do I have?
Microsoft makes this easier than most brands. Close the lid, flip the laptop over, and read the fine print near the rubber feet. You're looking for a four-digit number printed after the word Model. 2033 means you have the 13.5-inch, and 2035 means you have the 15-inch. The serial number sits on the same label.

If the print is worn off, turn the laptop on and open the Surface app that comes pre-installed — it shows your model and serial number on the first screen. Or hold the Windows key, press R, type msinfo32, and press Enter, then read the System Model line. Our Microsoft model number guide walks through each method with screenshots.
02 Is this the same as the Surface Laptop 7? They both came out in 2024.
No, and this is the most common mistake with this model. Microsoft released two entirely different Surface Laptops in 2024: the Surface Laptop 6 in April as a business-only machine, and the Surface Laptop 7 (7th Edition) in June as the consumer Copilot+ PC. They look almost identical from the outside.

Three ways to tell them apart. First, the processor: the Laptop 6 runs an Intel Core Ultra 5 135H or Ultra 7 165H, while the Laptop 7 runs a Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite or X Plus. Run the msinfo32 check and read the Processor line — if it says Snapdragon, you have a Laptop 7. Second, the model number: 2033 and 2035 are the Laptop 6; 2036 and 2037 are the Laptop 7. Third, the screen size: the smaller Laptop 6 is 13.5 inches, while the smaller Laptop 7 is 13.8 inches.

One more worth ruling out: the Surface Laptop 5 from 2022 looks similar again, but its processor reads Core i5-1235U or Core i7-1255U — the word "Ultra" never appears. If you'd like a second opinion, send us the serial number via custom quote and we'll identify it. We also wrote up the consumer model in detail in our Surface Laptop 7 review.
03 Will you buy it with a cracked screen, a dead battery, or a missing SSD?
Yes to all three. We buy Surface Laptop 6 units in every condition — cracked or delaminating touchscreens, swollen batteries, dented lids, failed touchpads, broken Surface Connect ports, and machines that won't power on at all. Grade the condition honestly above and your offer will match what arrives.

The missing-SSD case is worth calling out, because it happens constantly with this model. The Surface Laptop 6 was designed with a removable drive specifically so IT departments could retain it when retiring a fleet, so plenty of ex-corporate units arrive with no storage installed. We still buy them — just tell us up front so the quote is right.

Two other things to check before quoting: if the laptop is still locked behind a BIOS/UEFI password or shows a management enrolment screen at startup, mention it. And remember the RAM is soldered, so unlike many laptops there's no possibility your unit was upgraded after purchase — report the capacity Windows shows you.
04 What raises my Surface Laptop 6 trade-in value the most?
RAM is the biggest lever on this particular model, and for a reason people miss: because graphics are tied to memory, moving from 8GB to 16GB upgrades you from Intel Graphics to Intel Arc Graphics as well. You're being paid for two upgrades at once. From there, the Core Ultra 7 165H beats the Ultra 5 135H, a 1TB drive beats 256GB, and the 15-inch commands more than the 13.5-inch at equivalent specs. The rare 15-inch Black with the integrated smart card reader sits at the top of the range. Including the correct original charger — 39W for the 13.5-inch, 65W for the 15-inch — adds a little more.

Many people don't realize how well Surface hardware holds its value. Microsoft Surface laptops depreciate more slowly than most Windows brands, and because the Surface Laptop 6 sold almost entirely into corporate fleets, large numbers are now reaching end-of-lease with plenty of life left. A machine sitting in a storage closet is money doing nothing — and every unit that finds a second owner is one less heading for e-waste. Our blog covers this in how to sell a used Microsoft laptop, how to prepare your Surface for trade-in, and trade in, resell, or donate. Clearing out a whole fleet? Our bulk trade-in program is built for exactly that, and you can see everything else we buy on our Microsoft Surface buyback page.
05 How do I wipe my data before shipping, and how do I get paid?
Back up anything you want to keep to OneDrive or an external drive, then sign out of your Microsoft account and run Settings → System → Recovery → Reset this PC → Remove everything. If you turned on BitLocker, pause or suspend it before resetting. You don't need to remove the SSD yourself — our technicians run certified multi-pass erasure on every drive, documented in our data erasure protocols.

Two extra steps that matter for this model specifically. Because the Surface Laptop 6 was sold only to businesses, nearly every unit was enrolled in corporate management. If it came from an employer, ask IT to release it from Microsoft Intune, Windows Autopilot, and Azure AD / Entra ID, and to clear any Surface UEFI password set through DFCI. A device still registered to a company tenant will silently re-enrol itself after a factory reset, which sharply limits its resale value. Separately, if the laptop is tied to a personal Microsoft account, remove it from your account's device list at account.microsoft.com.

Once your laptop reaches us and passes functional testing, payment is approved within about two business days — PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, or CashApp, or a check in the mail. Your prepaid, insured shipping label is free. See how it works and our shipping instructions for packing guidance.
