The Microsoft Surface Pro 9, announced in October 2022, is the 2-in-1 detachable tablet that merged Microsoft's old Surface Pro and Surface Pro X lines into one name. That merger is the single most important thing to get right before you sell: the Surface Pro 9 ships in two very different builds under the same name. The standard Surface Pro 9 (Intel) runs 12th-gen Intel processors with Thunderbolt 4, while the Surface Pro 9 with 5G (SQ3) uses Microsoft's ARM-based SQ3 chip with built-in 5G and a nano-SIM slot. If you've been weighing where to sell your tablet online, our trade-in service buys it outright for cash — no buyer haggling, no listing fees. Before you choose your configuration above, confirm your processor type (Intel vs SQ3/5G), since the two price differently and live on separate paths. Also make sure you have the Pro 9 specifically — not the Pro 8, the Pro X, or the newer Pro 10/Pro 11. Match those, then select your specs above for an instant cash offer.

The Intel and SQ3 versions are physically near-identical, so the chip is the deciding factor. Check Settings → System → About, or look for the tells below:

Intel — Wi-Fi only, no SIM tray SQ3 / 5G — has a nano-SIM door

This is the Intel Surface Pro 9 if…

  • The processor reads 12th-gen Intel Core i5-1235U or i7-1255U
  • There is no SIM card door on the edge — it is Wi-Fi only
  • It came in Sapphire, Forest, Graphite, or Platinum (four color choices)
  • The USB-C ports support Thunderbolt 4

This is the SQ3 / 5G Surface Pro 9 if…

  • The processor reads Microsoft SQ3 (an ARM chip) and Windows shows "on ARM"
  • There is a nano-SIM door on the edge and 5G/cellular settings are present
  • It is Platinum only — no other color was offered

It is NOT this page if the chip is an 11th-gen Intel (that's the Pro 8), an older SQ1/SQ2 (that's the Pro X), or a 13th-gen Intel / SQ3 G2 / Snapdragon X (that's the Pro 10 or Pro 11). Not sure? Our guide to finding your gadget's model shows where to look, and you can browse the full Surface Pro trade-in catalog to land on the right page.

Frequently asked questions

01 How do I tell whether I have the Intel or the SQ3/5G Surface Pro 9 — and not a Pro 8 or Pro X?
Open Settings → System → About and read the processor. A 12th-gen Intel Core i5-1235U or i7-1255U is the Intel model; Microsoft SQ3 (with Windows shown as "on ARM") is the 5G model. A quick physical check: only the SQ3/5G version has a nano-SIM door on the edge, and it only came in Platinum. If the chip is an 11th-gen Intel it's actually the Pro 8, and an SQ1/SQ2 means the Pro X. Our guide to finding your gadget's model walks through it if you're unsure.
02 Can I upgrade the RAM or storage before selling?
No — the RAM on both the Intel and SQ3 Surface Pro 9 is soldered to the board and cannot be changed. The SSD is technically a removable component, but Microsoft only intends it to be swapped by a skilled technician following its service guide, so it isn't a practical do-it-yourself upgrade. The RAM and storage tier your device shipped with is what sets its value, so just select your exact configuration above. Worth noting: the SQ3/5G model maxes out at 512GB, while the Intel model can go up to 1TB.
03 How do I wipe my data and remove my account before shipping?
Back up anything you want to keep, then sign out of your Microsoft account and run Settings → System → Recovery → Reset this PC → Remove everything. If you have the 5G model, also remove your physical nano-SIM and clear any eSIM profile. There's no need to open the device or pull the SSD yourself — our team performs certified data sanitation on every device that reaches us. You can review the full process on the data erasure protocols page.
04 Which configurations raise my Surface Pro 9 value, and why use a trade-in service over a marketplace?
On the Intel side, an i7 with 16GB or 32GB of RAM and a 512GB or 1TB SSD earns the most. The SQ3/5G model holds its own thanks to built-in cellular, which buyers pay a premium for. Including the Surface Pro Signature Keyboard and Slim Pen 2 — both sold separately and pricey on their own — meaningfully lifts your offer, as does a crack-free screen and healthy battery. Compared with selling on eBay, Swappa, or Facebook Marketplace — where you handle photos, buyer questions, payment risk, and shipping — our trade-in service gives you one upfront cash quote and a free, insured prepaid label. Many people don't realize we buy Surface tablets at all; we take the full Surface Pro range.
05 How fast do I get paid, and what payment methods are available?
Once your Surface Pro 9 arrives at our facility and our team finishes functional and cosmetic inspection, payment is approved within two business days. Most sellers have money in hand within roughly 5–7 business days of drop-off. You choose how to get paid: PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, or CashApp for fast digital transfers, or a physical check by mail. Your prepaid UPS shipping label is free and the shipment is insured.
