The MSI GL63 is a 15.6-inch gaming laptop built around 8th and 9th Gen Intel Core processors paired with NVIDIA GTX and RTX graphics, aimed at players who wanted desktop-class frame rates in a laptop chassis without paying flagship prices. It sits in MSI's mid-range gaming line, one step below the RGB-heavy GE and GS series, which makes it a workhorse rather than a showpiece. One common variant is the GL63 9SDK, built around a 9th Gen Core i7 and GTX 1660 Ti or RTX 2060 graphics. Used gaming laptops like this hold value because the GPU inside still runs current titles at 1080p, and a lot of buyers shopping secondhand want exactly that combination of power and price. Pick the processor, graphics card and condition above for a live cash offer, and see how the process works before you send anything in, or start with our page to sell your laptop for cash if you are comparing models first.

Confirm you have the GL63

The fastest way to confirm your exact configuration is Windows itself. Press Windows key + R, type dxdiag, and check the System tab for the model name and BIOS string, or type msinfo32 for a fuller hardware summary including installed RAM and the exact processor. The model number is also printed on a sticker on the underside of the chassis, usually near the vents.

GL63

  • 15.6-inch gaming chassis, matte black plastic top and deck
  • Model designation printed on the bottom panel sticker
  • Paired with Intel 8th or 9th Gen Core i5 or i7 processors

GL63 9SDK

  • 9th Gen Intel Core i7 processor
  • GTX 1660 Ti or RTX 2060 graphics depending on build
  • Same 15.6-inch chassis and port layout as the base GL63

Prefer a visual check? Look for the red MSI dragon shield logo on the lid, a red-backlit keyboard rather than full RGB, and a single rear exhaust vent flanked by two side vents. Machines with per-key RGB and a steel-gray finish are a different MSI line, not this one.

Core hardware configurations

Processor

  • Intel Core i5, 8th Gen.
  • Intel Core i7, 8th Gen.
  • Intel Core i5, 9th Gen.
  • Intel Core i7, 9th Gen.

Graphics

  • NVIDIA GTX 1050 or 1050 Ti
  • NVIDIA GTX 1060
  • NVIDIA GTX 1660 Ti
  • NVIDIA RTX 2060

Memory & storage

  • RAM runs on standard SO-DIMM slots, so it can be upgraded after purchase
  • Storage combines an M.2 NVMe slot with a 2.5-inch SATA bay on most builds

The graphics card is what moves resale value the most on this model. An RTX 2060 build commands noticeably more interest than a GTX 1050 unit, even with the same processor.

Display & audio

Display: 15.6-inch Full HD, 1920x1080, anti-glare matte finish.

Audio: Stereo speakers with MSI Audio Boost tuning, front-facing grilles above the keyboard deck.

Keyboard: Steelseries-tuned membrane keyboard with red single-zone backlighting, not full RGB.

Ports & connectivity

The GL63 leans on a standard mix of Type-A and video-out ports rather than a modern all-USB-C layout, which is normal for a laptop of this generation.

Left side
  • RJ45 Ethernet
  • USB Type-A ports
  • Headphone and microphone jacks
Right side / Back
  • USB Type-C port
  • HDMI output
  • Mini DisplayPort on select configurations

Battery, build & more

Battery: Built-in lithium-polymer battery, sized for a gaming laptop rather than all-day portable use. Expect shorter runtime under load than on the general-purpose GL63 idle rating.

Build: Plastic chassis with a black matte finish and the MSI dragon logo on the lid. Heavier and thicker than a general-purpose laptop, closer to a desktop replacement.

Software: Shipped with Windows 10, upgradable to Windows 11 on supported configurations.

Known issues: Some units run warm under sustained gaming load, and the plastic deck can develop flex over years of use. Neither affects whether the laptop is sellable.

Frequently asked questions

01 How do I find the model number or exact configuration?
Check the sticker on the bottom panel, or run dxdiag or msinfo32 from Windows to see the processor, RAM and system model in one screen. The sticker is the most reliable source since it lists the exact factory configuration, including the suffix like 9SDK that tells you the generation and build. If the sticker has worn off, msinfo32 will still confirm the processor and installed memory, which is usually enough to identify your configuration for a quote.
02 How do I tell it apart from the GL73?
The GL73 is the 17.3-inch sibling in the same product line, sharing the same design language, keyboard and port layout, just in a larger chassis. If your screen measures 15.6 inches diagonally, you have the GL63. If it is noticeably larger and the laptop feels closer to a desktop replacement in size and weight, you likely have the GL73 instead. The bottom sticker will also state the chassis name directly, which is the fastest way to confirm.
03 Can I sell it with damage, a weak battery, or if it won't turn on?
Yes, in most cases. Cracked screens, worn batteries, and units that fail to power on can still be sold, and the condition picker above adjusts the offer accordingly rather than rejecting the device outright. Before shipping, remove any Microsoft account lock and make sure the laptop is signed out of your Microsoft account, since a locked device cannot be resold or refurbished. If the laptop cannot power on at all, note that in the condition selection so the offer reflects it accurately.
04 What raises the trade-in value the most?
The graphics card matters more than any other single factor on this model. An RTX 2060 or GTX 1660 Ti build is worth notably more than a GTX 1050 unit with the same processor. Beyond that, a clean screen with no dead pixels or cracks, a keyboard with no missing keycaps, a battery that still holds a reasonable charge, and having the original charger on hand all push the offer higher. Cosmetic wear on the plastic deck matters less than whether the hardware itself still performs.
05 How do I erase it, remove my accounts, and get paid?
Go to Settings → System → Recovery, then choose Reset this PC and select the option to remove everything. Before resetting, sign out of and remove the laptop from your Microsoft account under Settings → Accounts, and suspend BitLocker if it is enabled so the reset completes cleanly. Once the offer is locked in, shipping is free and insured, and payment goes out after our team tests the laptop, by PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, CashApp or check. Full step-by-step guidance is in our data erasure protocols.
