The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4, announced August 10, 2022 and released August 25, 2022, is the fourth generation of Samsung's book-style foldable and the model that finally made the outer screen genuinely usable. Built around a 7.6-inch Infinity Flex main display and a wider 6.2-inch cover display, it runs the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 with 12GB of RAM in every configuration and was the first Fold offered with 1TB of storage. It launched at roughly $1,800 and remained on sale until Samsung discontinued it in July 2023. Many people don't realize that a used foldable is still worth real cash rather than sitting in a drawer — and because the Z Fold4 was such an expensive phone new, even a well-worn one carries meaningful trade-in value. Gadget Salvation has bought pre-owned electronics directly from sellers since 2008: free insured shipping, no listings or haggling, and payment in about two business days. Pick your storage, color, and condition above for an instant cash offer.

Model identification & look-alike models

Find it in your settings (30 seconds)

  • Open Settings
  • Scroll all the way down and tap About phone
  • The Model number line is what you need
  • A Z Fold4 always starts with SM-F936
  • Tap Storage on the same screen to confirm 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB

All Galaxy Z Fold4 model numbers

  • SM-F936U — US, carrier-branded
  • SM-F936U1 — US, factory unlocked
  • SM-F936W — Canada
  • SM-F936B / SM-F936B/DS — Global & Europe (dual SIM)
  • SM-F936N — South Korea
  • SM-F9360 — China, Hong Kong, Taiwan
  • SC-55C (NTT Docomo) and SCG16 (au) — Japan

No settings access? Check the box or SIM tray

  • The retail box has a white label listing the Model and IMEI
  • Dial *#06# on the keypad to display the IMEI on screen
  • If the phone is dead or the screen is broken, send us the IMEI from the box and we'll identify it
  • The Z Fold4 has no microSD slot, so storage is whatever was built in at the factory — it cannot have been expanded

⚠ Do not confuse with these models

  • Z Fold5 (2023, SM-F946) — the critical tell: the Fold5 closes completely flat with no gap. Close your phone and look at it edge-on. If the two halves meet in a wedge with a visible gap at the hinge, you have a Fold4 or older.
  • Z Fold3 (2021, SM-F926) — noticeably taller (158.2mm vs 155.1mm), heavier (271g vs 263g), with a narrower letterbox-shaped cover screen. Its main camera is 12MP, not 50MP, and it was never sold with 1TB.
  • Z Flip4 (2022, SM-F721) — same year, but it's a clamshell that folds top-to-bottom into a square. Completely different device.
  • Z Fold6 / Fold7 — later generations, model numbers SM-F956 and SM-F966

Core hardware

Processor & memory

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 (SM8475), 4nm
  • Octa-core: 1× 3.19GHz Cortex-X2, 3× 2.75GHz Cortex-A710, 4× 1.80GHz Cortex-A510
  • Adreno 730 GPU
  • 12GB RAM on every single configuration — there was no 8GB or 16GB version, so RAM never affects your quote

Storage

  • 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB — UFS 3.1
  • No microSD card slot — storage cannot be expanded, which is exactly why the capacity you have matters so much at trade-in
  • 1TB units are the rarest and command the strongest premium

Software & support

  • Shipped with Android 12L and One UI 4.1.1
  • Received four major Android upgrades, reaching Android 16 / One UI 8
  • Samsung DeX desktop mode supported
  • A phone still receiving updates is worth more — if yours is on a current One UI build, say so

Colors

  • Graygreen, Phantom Black, Beige
  • Burgundy — Samsung.com exclusive, less common on the resale market
  • Color has minimal impact on value, but tell us anyway so we can match your listing

The two displays

Main (inner) foldable display

7.6-inch Infinity Flex Dynamic AMOLED 2X at 2176 × 1812 (~373 ppi), with an adaptive 1–120Hz refresh rate, HDR10+, and 1,200 nits peak brightness. This panel has a plastic surface, not glass — it scratches far more easily than a normal phone screen, and a soft crease down the middle is normal on every unit, not a defect.

Cover (outer) display

6.2-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X at 2316 × 904 in a 23.1:9 ratio, 48–120Hz, protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+. This is the screen that got meaningfully wider versus the Z Fold3, making the phone usable while closed.

Cameras

Rear triple camera

  • 50MP wide, f/1.8, dual-pixel PDAF, OIS
  • 10MP telephoto, f/2.4, OIS, 3× optical zoom
  • 12MP ultrawide, f/2.2, 123° field of view
  • Video up to 8K at 24fps and 4K at 60fps, HDR10+

Two front cameras

  • 10MP cover-screen selfie camera, f/2.2
  • 4MP under-display camera on the inner screen, f/1.8 — hidden beneath the panel, so it looks like a faint mesh patch rather than a hole. This is normal and is not screen damage.
  • Five cameras total across the device

Hinge, build & durability

Hinge & folding

Redesigned lighter hinge with Flex Mode, holding position at intermediate angles. Folded, the phone forms a slight wedge measuring 14.2mm at its thinnest and 15.8mm at its thickest. Hinge condition is the single biggest value factor on any foldable — grinding, crunching, looseness, or a hinge that won't hold its angle all reduce the offer, but we still buy the phone.

Build & water resistance

Armor Aluminum frame, Gorilla Glass Victus+ on the cover screen and back panel. Rated IPX8 — submersible to 1.5m for 30 minutes, but there is no dust rating at all, which is why grit in the hinge is a known failure point.

Inner screen protector

The main display ships with a factory-applied protective layer that is part of the screen, not a removable accessory. On many used units it has begun to bubble, lift at the crease, or peel. Please tell us if yours is peeling — it's extremely common, it does not disqualify the phone, and being upfront keeps your quote accurate.

Size & weight

Unfolded: 155.1 × 130.1 × 6.3 mm. Folded: 155.1 × 67.1 × 14.2–15.8 mm. Weight 263 g (9.28 oz).

Battery & charging

Dual-cell 4,400 mAh (2,340 + 2,060 mAh) split across both halves. 25W wired charging (50% in about 30 minutes), 15W wireless, and 4.5W reverse wireless for earbuds or a watch. No charger was included in the box — that's normal for this model and doesn't hurt your offer.

S Pen support

Works with the S Pen Fold Edition or S Pen Pro only, sold separately. There is no built-in pen silo in the body. Important: a standard Galaxy Note or S22 Ultra S Pen has a harder tip and will damage the inner display — never use one on this phone.

5G sub-6 & mmWave (US) Wi-Fi 6E Bluetooth 5.2 NFC + UWB Side-mounted fingerprint sensor USB-C 3.2 Nano-SIM + eSIM No headphone jack No microSD slot No charger in box

Frequently asked questions

01 How do I confirm my phone is a Galaxy Z Fold4?
No technical knowledge needed. Unfold the phone, open Settings, scroll to the very bottom, and tap About phone. Read the line labeled Model number. Every Galaxy Z Fold4 begins with SM-F936 — the letter after those digits just tells us which region or carrier it came from. While you're on that screen, tap Storage to check whether you have 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB, since that's one of the biggest factors in your offer.

If the screen is broken or the phone won't turn on, the same information is printed on the white label on the original retail box. You can also dial *#06# to display the IMEI number. Either one is enough for us to identify the exact device — see our guide to finding your gadget's model for step-by-step screenshots.
02 How do I tell a Z Fold4 apart from a Z Fold3 or Z Fold5?
All three look nearly identical in photos, so this trips up a lot of sellers — and quoting the wrong generation means the wrong offer. The model number check above is always definitive, but here are the physical tells:

Versus the Z Fold5 (2023): close the phone and look at it from the side, edge-on. The Fold5 shuts completely flat with the two halves touching. The Fold4 shuts into a wedge with a clearly visible gap near the hinge. If you can see daylight through the closed phone, it isn't a Fold5.

Versus the Z Fold3 (2021): the Fold3 is about 3mm taller and 8 grams heavier, and its cover screen is distinctly narrower and more letterboxed — typing on it feels cramped. Two easy checks: the Fold3's main rear camera is 12MP, not 50MP, and the Fold3 was never sold with 1TB of storage, so a 1TB unit cannot be a Fold3.

Versus the Z Flip4: the Flip4 folds top-to-bottom into a small square and has only one small outer screen strip. If your phone opens like a book, it's a Fold. Still not sure? Send us the IMEI through custom quote and we'll confirm it for you.
03 My inner screen protector is peeling and the hinge feels loose — will you still buy it?
Yes — and these two issues are so common on this model that we price for them routinely. The factory protective layer on the inner display lifts or bubbles at the crease on a large share of used Z Fold4 units, and hinges loosen with age. Neither disqualifies your phone.

We also buy Z Fold4s with a cracked cover screen, a damaged or dead inner display, a hinge that grinds or won't hold position, a swollen battery, a bent frame, a failed under-display camera, or a phone that won't power on at all. A few things to be aware of when grading: the soft crease down the middle of the inner screen is normal on every unit and is not damage, so don't mark it down for that. Do tell us if the inner display has a dark line, dead pixels, or unresponsive touch along the fold, since that's a genuine fault. And note that the Z Fold4 has no dust resistance rating — if grit has gotten into the hinge and you hear crunching, mention it.
04 What raises my Galaxy Z Fold4 trade-in value the most?
Three things matter most. Storage capacity is the biggest lever, since RAM is fixed at 12GB across the whole lineup and there's no microSD slot — a 1TB unit is worth substantially more than a 256GB one. Carrier lock status is second: a factory-unlocked SM-F936U1 is worth more than a carrier-locked SM-F936U, and a phone still under an installment plan or flagged as lost or stolen can't be purchased at all. Third is hinge and inner-screen condition, which on a foldable carries far more weight than cosmetic scuffs on the frame. Including the original box, the S Pen Fold Edition, or a genuine Samsung case all add a little on top.

Many people don't realize how much a two-generation-old foldable is still worth. The Z Fold4 sold for around $1,800 new, and even after several years that high starting point means a working unit retains real cash value — far more than most people assume when they leave one in a drawer. 05 How do I erase my data before shipping, and how do I get paid?
Do these in order — the order matters, because resetting first can lock the phone permanently:

1. Back up. Use Samsung Cloud, Google One, or copy files to a computer over USB-C.
2. Remove your Google account. Settings → Accounts and backup → Manage accounts → tap your Google account → Remove account. Skipping this triggers Factory Reset Protection, which locks the phone to your credentials and makes it unsellable until you sign back in.
3. Remove your Samsung account the same way, and turn off Find My Mobile.
4. Take out the physical SIM card and delete any eSIM profiles (Settings → Connections → SIM manager).
5. Factory reset. Settings → General management → Reset → Factory data reset.

If the screen is broken and you can't do this yourself, ship it anyway and let us know — we handle account removal on our end. Our full process is documented in our data erasure protocols.

Packing tip specific to foldables: ship the phone closed, wrapped in bubble wrap, in a box with padding on all sides. Never tape anything directly to the inner display.

Once it arrives and passes inspection, payment is approved within about two business days via PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, or CashApp, or a check mailed to you. Your prepaid insured label is free — see how it works and our shipping instructions.
