Laptop Trade-In vs. Best Buy vs. Apple: Cash or Store Credit?
All three cover shipping, but the payout form, the quote window, and whether you can cancel are very different. A side-by-side comparison from each company's own published terms.
In this article
The biggest difference between laptop trade-in programs is not the number on the quote — it is what you are paid with, and what you give up to get it. Gadget Salvation pays cash. Best Buy pays a gift card. Apple pays purchase credit or an Apple Gift Card, and does not list Windows laptops at all. None of the three charges you to ship the laptop in, so the terms that actually separate them are the quote window, who is responsible for erasing your data, and whether you can change your mind.
The three programs side by side
The Best Buy and Apple columns come from each company's own published terms as of October 2026.
| Gadget Salvation | Best Buy | Apple | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What you receive | Cash: check, PayPal, Venmo, or Zelle | "Payment is by Best Buy gift card" | Purchase credit or an Apple Gift Card |
| How long the quote holds | 30 days | 14 days to arrive, or the estimate may be revised or withdrawn | 14 days from kit delivery, or the quote may be revised |
| Inbound shipping | Free prepaid UPS label | Free prepaid label, or walk into a store | Free prepaid kit, or drop-off instructions |
| If the offer changes at inspection | Accept it, or have the laptop returned free | An updated quote is issued | You are contacted to accept or decline |
| Can you cancel? | Any time, no questions asked | Not addressed in the terms | No — "final and cannot be cancelled" unless you decline a revised quote |
| If the laptop is worth nothing | Recycled responsibly at no cost to you | May be recycled without compensation; to get it back, you supply a prepaid return label | Free recycling |
| Data erasure | NIST-compliant wipe, drives reformatted during inspection | "your sole responsibility to remove all personal data" | "You are responsible"; neither vendor nor Apple is liable |
| To qualify | No account needed | 18 or older (19 in Alabama and Nebraska) with state-issued ID | Age of majority, not a reseller, and the owner |
Apple does not take Windows laptops
Start with eligibility, because it removes Apple from the running for most laptops. Apple's program lists Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch, plus Samsung and Google smartphones. A Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, or MSI laptop is not listed. If you are holding a ThinkPad or an XPS, Apple is not an option and the real comparison is between a retailer gift card and cash.
When store credit is the better deal
Credit wins in one clear scenario: you are buying a replacement from that same retailer, and the trade-in value comes straight off the purchase. At Best Buy you can carry the laptop in, get an in-person appraisal, and walk out with credit the same day, with nothing to ship and nothing to wait for. If a new Mac is already in your cart, Apple credit applies to it directly.
When cash is the better deal
Cash wins everywhere else, and for three reasons beyond flexibility. The quote window is 30 days rather than 14. Erasing the drive is handled for you, to NIST standards, instead of being your liability. And the sale stays cancellable until you accept payment — where Apple's terms make the trade "final and cannot be cancelled" unless you decline a revised quote. Details of the process are in our guide to how a laptop trade-in works.
Frequently asked questions
Is Best Buy's laptop trade-in better than selling for cash?
Only if you are buying from Best Buy anyway, because the payout is a gift card rather than money. Under Best Buy's published terms, erasing your data is your responsibility, the estimate can be revised or withdrawn if the laptop does not arrive within 14 days, and a laptop with no trade-in value may be recycled without compensation unless you supply a prepaid return label.
Is Apple's trade-in better than selling a Mac for cash?
Only if you are buying Apple hardware, because the payout is purchase credit or an Apple Gift Card. Under Apple's terms the trade is "final and cannot be cancelled" unless you decline a revised quote, erasing your data is your responsibility, and the quote can be revised if the device does not arrive within 14 days of kit delivery or still has Find My enabled.
Can I trade in a Windows laptop at Apple?
No. Apple's trade-in program lists Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch, along with Samsung and Google smartphones. Windows laptops from Dell, HP, Lenovo, and others are not listed, so they cannot be traded in for Apple credit.
Which laptop trade-in pays the most?
None of the three publishes a payout table, so the only way to compare dollars is to get a quote from each for your exact model and condition. Compare the form of payment as well as the figure: a gift card worth slightly more than a cash offer is worth less if you were not planning to shop there.
