Apple MacBook Pro (2021)
- Free, insured shipping
- Certified data erasure
- Paid within 2 business days
- No selling fees, unlike marketplaces
The Apple MacBook Pro (2021) arrived in October 2021 as the most significant redesign of the Pro line in half a decade. Built around Apple's M1 Pro and M1 Max chips, it brought back the ports professionals had lost — MagSafe, HDMI, and a full SDXC card slot — deleted the Touch Bar in favor of physical function keys, and introduced the mini-LED Liquid Retina XDR display with ProMotion. It shipped in two sizes: the 14-inch (model A2442) and the 16-inch (model A2485), in Silver and Space Gray. Because memory and storage are soldered to the logic board and cannot be changed after purchase, the exact configuration you bought is permanent — and it determines your payout. Identify yours below, then select your configuration above for an instant cash offer.
Model identification
The one check that settles it
- Click the Apple menu () in the top-left corner of the screen.
- Choose About This Mac.
- You will see the chip name — it must read Apple M1 Pro or Apple M1 Max, and the model line should say MacBook Pro (14-inch, 2021) or (16-inch, 2021).
- This window also lists your memory and serial number. Note it all — it is everything we need.
- If the chip says M1, M2, M2 Pro, M3, or Intel, this is not your page. See the adjacent-model guide below.
Model numbers & identifiers
- 14-inch: model A2442 · identifiers MacBookPro18,3 (M1 Pro) and MacBookPro18,4 (M1 Max)
- 16-inch: model A2485 · identifiers MacBookPro18,1 (M1 Pro) and MacBookPro18,2 (M1 Max)
- The A-number is printed in tiny text on the underside of the laptop, near the regulatory markings.
- Finishes: Silver and Space Gray only.
Instant visual giveaways
- No Touch Bar. The top row is twelve full-height physical function keys with Touch ID at the right end. If you have a thin touchscreen strip instead, you own an older model.
- A notch at the top center of the screen, housing the camera.
- A MagSafe port — the flat magnetic charging connector on the left side.
- An SD card slot and a full-size HDMI port on the right side.
- Flat-edged aluminum body with squared-off sides, not tapered.
Which size do you have?
- 14-inch: 12.31 × 8.71 in (31.26 × 22.12 cm), 0.61 in thick, 3.5 lb (1.6 kg)
- 16-inch: 14.01 × 9.77 in (35.57 × 24.81 cm), 0.66 in thick, 4.7 lb (2.1 kg) with M1 Pro or 4.8 lb (2.2 kg) with M1 Max
- Both have a 254 ppi display, so they look near-identical in photographs — measure the screen diagonally if unsure.
- See our Apple model number guide for a walkthrough.
A2442 — 14-inch A2485 — 16-inch M1 Pro M1 Max October 2021
Core hardware configurations
Chip — M1 Pro
- 8-core CPU (6 performance + 2 efficiency) with 14-core GPU — 14-inch base only
- 10-core CPU (8 performance + 2 efficiency) with 14-core GPU
- 10-core CPU with 16-core GPU — 16-inch base
- 16-core Neural Engine · 200GB/s memory bandwidth
- Media engine with one video encode engine and one ProRes encode/decode engine
Chip — M1 Max
- 10-core CPU with 24-core GPU
- 10-core CPU with 32-core GPU — the top configuration
- 16-core Neural Engine · 400GB/s memory bandwidth — double the M1 Pro
- Two video encode engines and two ProRes encode/decode engines, versus one of each on the M1 Pro
- M1 Max units are worth considerably more than M1 Pro units, so confirm which you have in About This Mac rather than guessing.
Memory (unified) — soldered
- 14-inch: 16GB standard · configurable to 32GB (M1 Pro or M1 Max) or 64GB (M1 Max only)
- 16-inch with M1 Pro: 16GB standard · configurable to 32GB or 64GB
- 16-inch with M1 Max: 32GB standard · configurable to 64GB
- This is unified memory built into the chip package. It was fixed at the moment of purchase and cannot be upgraded, added to, or replaced — not by you, not by Apple, not by a repair shop.
- That permanence is exactly why higher-memory units command a real premium on resale. A 64GB machine is genuinely scarce.
Storage — soldered
- 14-inch: 512GB standard, configurable to 1TB, 2TB, 4TB, or 8TB
- 16-inch with M1 Pro: 512GB standard, configurable to 1TB, 2TB, 4TB, or 8TB
- 16-inch with M1 Max: 1TB standard, configurable to 2TB, 4TB, or 8TB
- The SSD is soldered to the logic board and is not removable or upgradable.
- To check yours: Apple menu → System Settings → General → Storage.

- Six-speaker sound system with force-canceling woofers and wide stereo sound
- Spatial audio with Dolby Atmos on the built-in speakers; dynamic head tracking with supported AirPods
- Studio-quality three-microphone array with directional beamforming
- 1080p FaceTime HD camera in the notch, with an advanced image signal processor — a direct upgrade from the 720p cameras on earlier Pros
- 3.5mm headphone jack with advanced support for high-impedance headphones
Ports & connectivity
The port layout is identical on the 14-inch and the 16-inch, and it is one of the defining features of this generation — Apple restored connections that had been absent from the Pro line since 2016.
- 1× MagSafe 3 charging port (magnetic, detaches if the cable is yanked)
- 2× Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C) (40Gb/s, DisplayPort, USB 4, and charging)
- 1× 3.5mm headphone jack
- 1× SDXC card slot
- 1× HDMI port (one display at up to 4K 60Hz)
- 1× Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C)
3× Thunderbolt 4 Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) Bluetooth 5.0 Touch ID Force Touch trackpad
External display support
- M1 Pro: up to two external displays at up to 6K 60Hz
- M1 Max: up to three external displays at up to 6K 60Hz, plus one more at up to 4K 60Hz
- This gap is a genuine reason buyers seek out M1 Max units specifically.
What this MacBook Pro does not have
- No Touch Bar — removed in this generation and replaced with physical function keys
- No upgradable memory or storage — both are soldered
- No Ethernet port and no USB-A ports
- No Wi-Fi 6E — this generation is Wi-Fi 6 only
- No Bluetooth 5.3 — Bluetooth 5.0 only
- No 8K or 4K/120Hz output over HDMI — the HDMI port caps at 4K 60Hz
- No touchscreen and no user-replaceable battery
- No Space Black finish — that color did not exist until late 2023
Battery, build & more
Battery & charging — 14-inch
70-watt-hour lithium-polymer battery (rated 69.6Wh). Apple quotes up to 17 hours of Apple TV app movie playback and up to 11 hours of wireless web. Ships with a 67W USB-C adapter on the 8-core M1 Pro, or a 96W adapter with the 10-core M1 Pro and M1 Max. Fast charging requires the 96W adapter.
Battery & charging — 16-inch
100-watt-hour lithium-polymer battery (rated 99.6Wh) — the largest Apple can ship under airline rules. Up to 21 hours of Apple TV app movie playback and up to 14 hours of wireless web. Ships with a 140W USB-C adapter, and fast charging is included as standard.
Check your battery health before quoting
Battery condition moves the price on Macs more than on most laptops. Open Apple menu → System Settings → Battery, then click the small ⓘ next to Battery Health to see the maximum capacity percentage and cycle count. Machines holding above 80% capacity sell for noticeably more, and a battery flagged as needing service should be declared so we can grade it correctly.
Keyboard & trackpad
Backlit Magic Keyboard with 78 (US) or 79 (ISO) keys, including twelve full-height function keys and an inverted-T arrow cluster. Touch ID sits at the top right with an ambient light sensor. Large Force Touch trackpad with pressure sensing and Force clicks. This is the scissor-switch Magic Keyboard — not the troubled butterfly mechanism of 2016–2019 models.
Include the right charger
These ship with three different adapters depending on configuration — 67W, 96W, or 140W — plus a 2m USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable. Send whichever came with your machine. The 140W brick in particular is expensive to replace, and a missing adapter reduces the offer.
Build & materials
Enclosure made from 100% recycled aluminum, with 100% recycled rare earth elements in the magnets and 100% recycled tin in the logic-board solder. ENERGY STAR certified. Aluminum dents and scuffs rather than cracking, so check the lid corners and the underside when grading yours.
Frequently asked questions
There is one reliable check, and it takes about ten seconds.
Click the Apple menu () in the very top-left corner of your screen, then choose About This Mac. A small window opens. Read the Chip line. For this page, it must say Apple M1 Pro or Apple M1 Max. The window also names the model, for example "MacBook Pro (14-inch, 2021)", and gives you the memory and serial number. Write all four things down — model, chip, memory, serial — and you have everything needed for an accurate quote.
If the Mac will not switch on, turn it over and read the small print on the underside. You are looking for A2442 (14-inch) or A2485 (16-inch). The serial number is printed there too, and we can decode the configuration from it.
Three quick physical confirmations. This generation has no Touch Bar — the top row is twelve normal physical keys with Touch ID at the right end. It has a notch at the top of the screen. And it has a MagSafe charging port, an HDMI port, and an SD card slot. A MacBook Pro missing any of these is a different model.
For a fuller walkthrough, see our Apple model number guide or the Find Your Gadget's Model hub. If you are still unsure, send us the serial number through Custom Quote, and we will identify it for you.
This is the most important question on the page, because of one specific trap.
The 2023 MacBook Pro with M2 Pro or M2 Max is externally identical to this one. Same chassis, same dimensions, same notch, same three Thunderbolt ports, same MagSafe, same HDMI, same SD slot, same two colors. Model numbers A2779 (14-inch) and A2780 (16-inch). There is no way to tell them apart by looking. The only reliable test is About This Mac: if the chip reads M2 Pro or M2 Max, you have the 2023 model, not this one. Quoting the wrong year means a re-grade and a delay, so please check rather than assume.
Late-2023 M3 Pro and M3 Max models use the same body again, in models A2992 and A2991. One helpful shortcut: those introduced the Space Black finish. If your MacBook Pro is Space Black, it is definitely not a 2021 — this generation came only in Silver and Space Gray.
MacBook Pro 13-inch (2020 M1 or 2022 M2), model A2338. Much easier to spot: it has a Touch Bar, only two Thunderbolt ports, and no MagSafe, no HDMI, and no SD card slot.
Intel MacBook Pro 16-inch (2019), model A2141. Has a Touch Bar and four Thunderbolt 3 ports, with no MagSafe, HDMI, or SD slot. About This Mac will show an Intel processor rather than an Apple chip.
MacBook Air (M1 or M2). Thinner and lighter, no fan, only two ports, and no HDMI or SD slot. The M1 Air also has the older tapered wedge shape.

Yes. We buy these in every condition. Cracked or delaminating screens, dented lids, scuffed aluminum, failed speakers, dead keys, liquid damage, a battery that will not hold charge, or a Mac that will not power on at all — all of it still has value. Describe it honestly in the condition selector above, and the price you see is the price we honor.
Two things specific to this model are worth knowing.
Battery health matters more than usual. Because the battery is glued into the chassis and not user-replaceable, its condition carries real weight. Check Apple menu → System Settings → Battery, click the ⓘ beside Battery Health, and note the maximum capacity percentage. Above 80% is healthy. If macOS reports "Service Recommended," say so when you quote.
Nothing inside can be upgraded, so the original spec is the spec. Memory and storage are soldered, which means no owner has ever added RAM or swapped the SSD on one of these. What it shipped with is what it has — and it is why a 32GB or 64GB machine holds its value so well.
If the bottom case is bulging or the trackpad has lifted, that is a swollen battery. Stop charging the Mac and tell us when you quote so we can arrange safe transit. Our shipping instructions cover packing, and How It Works explains the process end to end.
Five things move the number, and on this model they are unusually decisive:
- M1 Max over M1 Pro. The single biggest factor. Double the memory bandwidth, up to 32 GPU cores, two ProRes engines, and support for more external displays. Video and 3D professionals actively hunt these down.
- Memory. Because it is soldered and can never be added to, a 64GB machine is genuinely scarce and prices far above a 16GB one. This is the most under-appreciated value driver on the model.
- Storage. Same logic — 2TB, 4TB, and 8TB configurations were expensive options and remain rare.
- Screen size. The 16-inch generally out-values the 14-inch at matching specifications.
- Battery health and cosmetic condition. Above 80% capacity and a clean, undented lid protect the offer meaningfully.
Shipping the original 67W, 96W, or 140W adapter also protects your price.
Many people don't realize a Mac this capable is still worth serious money years later — and that Apple's own trade-in program is rarely the best return. Gadget Salvation has been a dedicated consumer-electronics trade-in service since 2008. You answer a few questions, get an instant quote, ship with a free prepaid insured UPS label, and get paid in actual cash. Apple Trade In hands back store credit that can only be spent on more Apple products; we send money you can spend anywhere. Selling privately on eBay or Swappa can net more, but you take on the listing, the photographs, the fees, and the risk of a dispute. This step matters more on a Mac than on any other laptop. Apple Silicon Macs have Activation Lock, which ties the machine to your Apple Account. If it is still locked when it reaches us, the Mac cannot be reset or resold, and we cannot pay you for it until you release it remotely. Please do not skip this.
Before you box it up:
- Back up your data using Time Machine to an external drive, or copy what matters to iCloud or another computer.
- Sign out of iMessage and Music if you use them, and unpair any Bluetooth accessories you are keeping.
- Erase and release in one step. Open Apple menu → System Settings → General → Transfer or Reset → Erase All Content and Settings. On this generation of macOS, that single action signs you out of your Apple Account, turns off Find My and removes Activation Lock, and wipes the drive. Follow the prompts and enter your password when asked.
- Confirm it worked: after it restarts, you should see the Hello setup screen. If it asks for an Apple Account password instead, Activation Lock is still on — sign in and repeat the reset.
If the Mac will not switch on, you can still remove it remotely: sign in at iCloud.com, open Find My, select this Mac, and choose Remove This Device. Tell us when you ship it.
Because the SSD is soldered, there is nothing to remove — and no reason to open the machine. Every Mac we receive also goes through our certified sanitization process regardless. Details are on our data erasure protocols page, and 8 Things to Do Before Selling Your MacBook Pro covers the full checklist.
Payment: once your MacBook Pro arrives and clears functional testing, payment is approved within about two business days. Choose PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, or CashApp, or a physical check mailed to your address. Your shipping label is free and fully insured from the moment you drop the box off.
