The HP Elite x360 1040 Series is HP's flagship 14-inch business convertible, and this page covers three generations sold across 2022, 2023, and 2024: the G9 (2022, 12th-generation Intel Core), the G10 (2023, 13th-generation Intel Core), and the G11 (2024, Intel Core Ultra Series 1). All three share the same magnesium-alloy 360-degree hinge design with a 14-inch 16:10 touchscreen that folds into laptop, tent, stand, or tablet mode. One naming detail trips up almost every seller: HP dropped the word "Book" from this line starting with the G9, so the official name is HP Elite x360 1040 14-inch G9 / G10 / G11 2-in-1 Notebook PC — but Amazon, B&H, CDW, and most resellers still list the identical machine as an HP EliteBook x360 1040. Both names describe the same device here. Because these were sold almost entirely to corporations and managed IT fleets, huge numbers are now reaching the resale market as companies refresh. Many people don't realize a retired work laptop can be sold online for cash instead of sitting in a drawer — pick your processor in the tool above to see an instant offer, or read on to identify exactly which generation you own.

Which generation do you have?

On this laptop, the processor is the only thing you need to identify, because each generation used a completely different chip family. You don't need to open anything or know any technical terms. Press the Windows key, type About your PC, press Enter, and read the "Processor" line. Then match it below. If you'd rather read the label, close the lid, flip the laptop over, and look for the printed name, Product #, and Serial # on the bottom cover.

G9 — released 2022

  • Intel Core i5-1235U or i5-1245U
  • Intel Core i7-1255U or i7-1265U
  • Any processor number beginning with 12 means a G9
  • Intel Iris Xe integrated graphics
  • Ports include HDMI 2.0 and two USB-A ports

G10 — released 2023

  • Intel Core i5-1335U or i5-1345U
  • Intel Core i7-1355U or i7-1365U
  • Any processor number beginning with 13 means a G10
  • Intel Iris Xe integrated graphics
  • Externally almost identical to the G9 — the processor is the only reliable tell

G11 — released 2024

  • Intel Core Ultra 5 125U or Ultra 5 125H
  • Intel Core Ultra 7 155U, Ultra 7 155H, or Ultra 7 165H
  • If it says Core Ultra rather than Core i5 or i7, you have a G11
  • Intel Arc graphics on the "H" chips; Intel Graphics on the lower-power "U" chips
  • Ports include HDMI 2.1 and only one USB-A port

Storage

  • Single M.2 2280 PCIe NVMe solid state drive — this is the one component that is replaceable
  • G9: PCIe Gen 4 NVMe, 256GB to 2TB
  • G10 and G11: PCIe Gen 4 NVMe, 256GB to 2TB
  • No 2.5-inch drive bay and no second M.2 slot in any configuration

Display & audio

Display

Every model uses a 14-inch 16:10 touchscreen with pen support. The standard panel across all three generations is a WUXGA (1920 × 1200) IPS panel, offered at 250, 400, or 1,000 nits of brightness. The 1,000-nit option includes HP Sure View Reflect, an integrated privacy filter that darkens the screen for anyone looking from the side — a common corporate order and a genuine feature upgrade. The G11 adds a top-tier option the earlier generations never had: a 2.8K (2880 × 1800) 120Hz OLED panel with 100% sRGB coverage. If your screen is noticeably richer and deeper black than a typical office laptop, you likely have an OLED.

Audio & camera

Quad stereo speakers with discrete amplifiers and dual array microphones, tuned by Bang & Olufsen on the G9 and G10 and by Poly Studio on the G11. A 5MP infrared webcam is standard on every unit, with a physical privacy shutter and Windows Hello face recognition. HP Presence software handles auto-framing and lighting correction.

Ports & connectivity

Port selection is generous for a machine this thin, and it changed between generations — this is one of the quickest ways to confirm which one you have.

G9 & G10 (2022–2023)
  • 2× Thunderbolt 4 / USB4 Type-C, 40Gbps (with Power Delivery charging and DisplayPort 1.4)
  • 2× USB-A 3.2 Gen 1, 5Gbps (one supports charging other devices)
  • 1× HDMI 2.0
  • 1× 3.5mm headphone and microphone combo jack
  • 1× Nano SIM slot (optional, only on 4G LTE or 5G configurations)
G11 (2024)
  • 2× Thunderbolt 4 / USB4 Type-C, 40Gbps (with Power Delivery charging and DisplayPort 2.1)
  • 1× USB-A 3.2 Gen 1, 5Gbps
  • 1× USB-C 3.2
  • 1× HDMI 2.1
  • 1× 3.5mm combo jack, plus optional Nano SIM slot

What this laptop lacks in any generation: no SD or microSD card reader, no built-in Ethernet port (a USB or Thunderbolt dock is required for wired networking), no optical drive, and no discrete graphics. None of these are faults, and none of them reduce your offer — they simply were never part of the design, so don't go looking for them.

Wi-Fi 6E (G9 & G10) Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 (G11) Bluetooth 5.2 – 5.4 Optional 4G LTE / 5G WWAN Optional NFC TPM 2.0 MIL-STD-810H tested

Battery, build & more

Battery

The G9 and G10 use an HP Long Life 3-cell battery with either 38 Wh or 51 Wh capacity, depending on how the unit was ordered. The G11 moved to a considerably larger 6-cell 68 Wh pack, which is why it holds a charge noticeably longer. A worn battery on a three-to-four-year-old fleet laptop is entirely normal and is handled by the condition questions in the quote tool.

Charger

All three generations charge over USB-C with a 65W adapter, and the same brick works across the whole series. Because USB-C chargers are inexpensive and interchangeable, this matters less here than on a gaming laptop — but including the original HP adapter still improves your offer, so answer the "Charger Included?" question above accordingly.

Security hardware

TPM 2.0 on every unit, plus a fingerprint reader, infrared face recognition, a physical camera privacy shutter, and HP Sure View Reflect on 1,000-nit screens. These are the features that made the line popular with IT departments — and the reason a proper corporate release matters before you ship it. See FAQ 05 below.

Keyboard & pen

Full-size spill-resistant backlit keyboard with DuraKeys coating and an enlarged glass trackpad. Many units shipped with an HP Rechargeable Pen or Active Pen. If you still have the pen, include it — accessories sold with the machine enhance what we can offer, though they are never required.

Weight

Approximately 1.34 kg (2.95 lb) for the G9 and G10, and about 1.38 kg (3.05 lb) for the G11 with its larger battery. Enclosures use roughly 90 percent recycled magnesium.

Dimensions

Roughly 31.5 × 22.1 cm (12.4" × 8.7") with a thickness of about 1.5 cm (0.6"), consistent across the G9, G10, and G11. Finished in natural silver aluminum.

Selling your HP Elite x360 1040 to Gadget Salvation

Gadget Salvation has been buying used electronics directly from consumers and businesses since 2008. We are not a marketplace and not an auction — we are the buyer. You select your processor above; we lock in a firm cash offer; we email you a prepaid, fully insured shipping label; and payment goes out within two business days of your laptop arriving and passing inspection. No listing fees, no seller fees, no shipping costs, no meeting strangers, and no chargeback risk weeks after the sale. Payment is issued via PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, Cash App, or by mail.

Because so many of these are retired-fleet machines, we very often receive this device in quantity. If you're clearing out more than a handful, our corporate device buyback, school device buyback, and sell-in-bulk programs handle volume properly rather than requiring you to quote each unit one at a time. For a single laptop, read how the process works first if you'd like. Our blog guides on the HP laptop trade-in process and how to sell a used HP laptop online walk through prep and pricing in more detail, and trade in, resell, or donate is an honest comparison of when each route makes sense. Frequently asked questions

01 How do I tell whether mine is a G9, G10, or G11?
Check the processor — it's the fastest and most reliable method, and it needs no technical knowledge. Press the Windows key, type "About your PC," press Enter, and read the "Processor" line. A number starting with 12 (i5-1235U, i5-1245U, i7-1255U, i7-1265U) is a G9. A number starting with 13 (i5-1335U, i5-1345U, i7-1355U, i7-1365U) is a G10. Anything that says Core Ultra (Ultra 5 125U or 125H, Ultra 7 155U, 155H, or 165H) is a G11. Alternatively, press Fn + Esc to open HP System Information, which displays the full product name and serial number in one window, or flip the laptop over and read the bottom label. One quick physical tell: the G11 has a single USB-A port, while the G9 and G10 have two. Our processor type guide and HP model number guide both walk through it step by step.
02 My laptop says "EliteBook x360 1040" — is that the same thing, or a different model?
It depends entirely on the generation number, and this is the single most common mix-up on this model. If it says G9, G10, or G11, it's the same machine — HP officially removed "Book" from the name starting with the G9, but retailers kept using the old wording, so an "EliteBook x360 1040 G10" and an "Elite x360 1040 G10" are identical. Quote it here. If it says G8, G7, G6, or G5, it is a genuinely different, older laptop (the G8 used 11th-gen Intel chips in 2021) and is not covered by this page — request a custom quote instead. Four other HP models get confused with this one. The HP EliteBook 1040 G9/G10/G11 is the clamshell version — if your screen does not fold all the way back into a tablet, that's what you have. The HP Elite x360 830 G9/G10 is the 13.3-inch sibling with nearly identical styling; measure your screen diagonally, since this page is for 14-inch units only. The HP Elite Dragonfly G3/G4 is a lighter 13.5-inch convertible from the same era. And the HP EliteBook X Flip G1i is the 2025 successor that replaced this line, not part of this series. When in doubt, browse our full HP laptop page.
03 Will you buy one with a cracked screen, dead battery, or broken hinge?
Yes. We buy these in every working state. Convertibles take specific kinds of wear, and we see all of it: a 360-degree hinge that has gone loose or stiff, a touchscreen that no longer responds in tablet mode, a cracked or delaminating display, a battery that only lasts an hour, worn keycap lettering, a failed fingerprint reader, a broken privacy shutter, dents in the magnesium lid, or a machine that won't power on at all. All of it still carries real cash value, because the processor, memory, and SSD retain worth independently of the chassis. Set "Functionality" to Defective above and check the specific boxes that apply. Please describe the condition accurately rather than optimistically — an honest description means the offer you see is what you actually get paid, with no revision after inspection.
04 What raises the trade-in value of an Elite x360 1040 the most?
Generation and processor tier lead — a G11 with a Core Ultra 7 sits well above a G9 with a Core i5, and each year of age matters a great deal on business hardware. After that, cosmetic condition is the biggest lever you actually control: a clean unit and a scuffed one of the same specification can differ by a large margin. But many people don't realize how much the invisible configuration matters here. Memory is soldered on every one of these, so a 32GB or 64GB unit is permanently worth more than an 8GB one and can never be brought up to match — it is a fixed, permanent value driver rather than something a refurbisher can add later. The same logic applies to the optional extras ordered at the corporate level: a 2.8K OLED screen on a G11, a 1,000-nit HP Sure View Reflect privacy panel, 5G or LTE WWAN, and a 1TB or 2TB SSD all add meaningful value. Since the selector above asks only for your processor, if your unit has an unusually high specification — 32GB or more of RAM, the OLED panel, or 5G — it's worth requesting a custom quote so those extras are priced in. Our guide to what a used laptop in good condition is worth and our roundup of the best laptop trade-in offers explain how resale pricing is calculated.
05 This was my work laptop. How do I properly wipe it and release it, and when do I get paid?
Start with the corporate release — it matters more than the wipe. These machines were built for managed IT fleets, and a unit that is still enrolled cannot be resold no matter how thoroughly you erase it. Before shipping, confirm with your IT department that the laptop has been removed from Windows Autopilot and Microsoft Intune or any other MDM, that any BIOS or power-on password and HP Sure Admin or HP Sure Recover lock have been cleared, and that any Absolute/Computrace persistence agent has been deactivated. A device that arrives still locked to a company tenant will re-enroll itself on the next setup and cannot be paid out at the quoted amount. If you are not certain the laptop was formally released to you, please check before you ship it. Once that's settled, back up anything you want to keep, sign out of your Microsoft account, then go to Settings › System › Recovery › Reset this PC, choosing to remove everything. Do not remove the SSD yourself — a laptop arriving with no drive is quoted as missing hardware. Every drive we receive is securely erased during processing, regardless of the details; the details are on our data erasure protocols page. After you accept your offer, we email a free, insured, prepaid label — see our shipping instructions for packing guidance, and take extra care with the hinge and screen on a convertible. Payment is issued within two business days of arrival and inspection, by PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, Cash App, or a mailed check.
