The Lenovo ThinkBook 16 Gen 7 is the 2024 model-year refresh of Lenovo's 16-inch small-business laptop, and it shipped in two completely separate hardware families that look identical from the outside: the ThinkBook 16 G7 IML (Intel, machine type 21MS) and the ThinkBook 16 G7 ARP (AMD, machine type 21MW). Both arrived on US shelves during 2024 and continued selling into 2025, wrapped in the same anodized aluminum, dual-tone Arctic Grey shell with a 16-inch 16:10 display, a full numeric keypad, and a 180-degree hinge. What separates them — and what moves your payout by a wide margin — is the processor family, whether you got the standard 1920 × 1200 panel or the higher-end 2560 × 1600 120Hz screen, how much DDR5 is in the two memory slots, and which SSD capacity Lenovo installed. If you no longer need this notebook, we buy it outright for cash through our online buyback service. Simply choose your exact configuration in the calculator tool above, and we'll share an instant estimate. If you are not sure which version you own, the identification steps below take about 30 seconds, or contact us for assistance.

Is this your laptop? Identify your ThinkBook 16 Gen 7

Flip the laptop over. The printed label on the bottom cover carries the marketing name and the machine type. If the label is worn off, use the Windows steps underneath the cards.

✅ ThinkBook 16 G7 IML — Intel (21MS)

  • Bottom label reads ThinkBook 16 G7 IML
  • Model number begins with 21MS (for example, 21MS0067US)
  • Processor name starts with Intel Core Ultra 5 or Core Ultra 7 — specifically 125U, 125H, 155U, or 155H
  • One of the two USB-C ports is marked with the Thunderbolt 4 lightning-bolt icon
  • Arctic Grey only

✅ ThinkBook 16 G7 ARP — AMD (21MW)

  • Bottom label reads ThinkBook 16 G7 ARP
  • Model number begins with 21MW (for example, 21MW0037US)
  • Processor name starts with AMD Ryzen 3, Ryzen 5, or Ryzen 7 — 7335U, 7533HS, 7535HS, 7735HS, or the 100-series 150 / 170
  • No Thunderbolt icon on either USB-C port (this one uses USB4 instead)
  • Available in Arctic Grey or Cosmic Blue

❌ This is NOT a ThinkBook 16 Gen 7 if…

  • The processor is an Intel Core i5-1335U or i7-1355U, or a Ryzen 5 7530U / Ryzen 7 7730U — that is the Gen 6 (21KH or 21KK), which looks exactly the same
  • The model number starts with 21SH or 21UT — those are the Gen 8 and Gen 9
  • The model number starts with 21MR or 21MV — same generation, but the 14-inch ThinkBook 14 Gen 7, which has no number pad
  • There is a separate NVIDIA GeForce or RTX sticker and a thicker rear vent — that is a ThinkBook 16p
  • The lid says ThinkPad and the chassis is black with a red TrackPoint nub in the keyboard

Not sure? Read it straight off Windows. Hold the Windows key and press R, type msinfo32, and press Enter. In the window that opens, look at two lines: System Model shows your full model number (such as 21MS0066US or 21MW0002US), and Processor shows the exact chip. Those two lines are all you need to complete the quote form. Our guide to finding your Lenovo model number walks through the same steps with screenshots, and our guide to identifying your processor explains how to read the Core Ultra and Ryzen naming.

  • Windows 11 Pro, Windows 11 Home, or Windows 11 Home Single Language; some business SKUs shipped with no preloaded OS
  • Dedicated Copilot key on the keyboard
  • Intel models qualify as AI PCs thanks to the on-chip NPU; AMD 21MW models have no NPU
  • Firmware TPM 2.0 built into the processor

Display & audio

Display — Intel 21MS

16-inch 16:10 IPS panels with an anti-glare finish and a 90% screen-to-body ratio. Four options were sold: WUXGA (1920 × 1200) touchscreen at 300 nits and 45% NTSC; WUXGA non-touch at 300 nits and 45% NTSC; WUXGA non-touch at 300 nits with 100% sRGB and Eyesafe 2.0 certification; and the top-tier WQXGA (2560 × 1600) non-touch at 350 nits, 100% sRGB, 120Hz with factory color calibration. The WQXGA 120Hz panel is the single biggest display upgrade in the lineup and was never offered on the AMD version. No OLED panel exists for this generation.

Display — AMD 21MW

16-inch 16:10 IPS, anti-glare, 90% screen-to-body ratio, all at 1920 × 1200 (WUXGA) and 60Hz. Three variants: non-touch at 300 nits / 45% NTSC, non-touch at 300 nits / 100% sRGB with Eyesafe 2.0, and a 10-point multitouch version at 300 nits / 45% NTSC. There is no higher resolution or high-refresh option on AMD models.

Audio

Stereo 2W speakers tuned with Dolby Audio, driven by a Realtek ALC3287 codec, plus a dual-microphone array with smart noise cancellation for calls. There is no subwoofer and no Harman-branded audio in this generation.

Camera

Three webcam options, all with a physical privacy shutter and fixed focus: HD 720p, FHD 1080p, or FHD 1080p with an IR sensor for Windows Hello face sign-in. Only the IR hybrid version supports facial recognition — if your laptop signs you in with your face, note that on the quote form, because it is worth more.

Ports & connectivity

The physical port layout is identical on the Intel and AMD versions. The one meaningful difference is hidden inside the second USB-C port, and it is the easiest way to tell the two apart without opening Windows.

Left side
  • 1× USB-C (10Gbps / USB 3.2 Gen 2) with Power Delivery and DisplayPort 1.4
  • 1× USB-C (Thunderbolt 4 with DisplayPort 2.1 on Intel 21MS models; USB4 40Gbps with DisplayPort 1.4 on AMD 21MW models — check for the lightning-bolt icon)
  • 1× HDMI 2.1, up to 4K at 60Hz
  • 1× USB-A (5Gbps / USB 3.2 Gen 1), Always On charging
  • 1× 3.5mm headphone/microphone combo jack
Right side
  • 1× USB-A (5Gbps / USB 3.2 Gen 1)
  • 1× Gigabit Ethernet (RJ-45) with Wake-on-LAN (a full-size wired network jack, which is increasingly rare on 16-inch laptops and does add value)
  • 1× Full-size SD card reader
  • 1× Kensington Nano Security Slot

Wi-Fi 6 / Wi-Fi 6E Bluetooth 5.2 / 5.3 Gigabit Ethernet SD card reader No cellular / WWAN

What this laptop does not have: no cellular or 5G modem, no pen or stylus support, no optical drive, no barrel-style power jack, no dedicated DisplayPort or VGA, no microSD slot (it takes full-size SD cards), and no fingerprint reader on entry SKUs. Charging is USB-C only, so if your charger is missing, you can use any 65W-or-higher USB-C PD adapter to power it on for testing.

Battery, build & more

Battery & charging

Two battery sizes were sold: a 45Wh pack with Rapid Charge Pro (to 50% in about 30 minutes) or a 71Wh pack. Lenovo rates the 45Wh models at roughly 6.5–7 hours and the 71Wh models at roughly 11–13 hours on MobileMark 25. Adapters are 65W USB-C on both platforms, with a 100W USB-C option on Intel models carrying the 71Wh battery. A battery that no longer holds a charge does not disqualify your laptop from a quote.

Keyboard & touchpad

6-row spill-resistant keyboard with a full numeric keypad, 1.5mm key travel, multimedia function keys, and a dedicated Copilot key. LED backlighting was optional, so plenty of units have none. The buttonless Mylar touchpad measures 75 × 120 mm (2.95 × 4.72 inches) and supports Windows Precision drivers.

Build & hinge

Anodized, sandblasted aluminum lid over a PC-ABS bottom cover in a dual-tone finish. Arctic Grey on both platforms; Cosmic Blue was AMD-only. The display folds flat on a 180-degree hinge. Lenovo passed the chassis through MIL-STD-810H durability testing.

Security features

Firmware TPM 2.0 in the SoC, camera privacy shutter, Kensington Nano lock slot, self-healing BIOS, and hard disk / power-on / supervisor/user BIOS passwords. Optional extras include a touch fingerprint reader built into the power button and an IR camera for face sign-in.

Weight

Starting at 1.7 kg (3.75 lb) — varies slightly with battery size, panel choice, and touchscreen glass.

Dimensions

356 × 253.5 × 17.5 mm (14.01" × 9.98" × 0.69").

Frequently asked questions

01 How do I find out if I have the ThinkBook 16 Gen 7, step by step?
You have two easy options, and you do not need to know anything about computers to use either one. Option 1 — the label: close the lid, turn the laptop upside down, and read the small printed block of text near the middle or bottom edge of the plastic cover. You are looking for a line that says "ThinkBook 16 G7 IML" or "ThinkBook 16 G7 ARP," and a line that starts with "Model" or "MT" followed by a code beginning in 21MS or 21MW. Option 2 — Windows: hold the Windows key (the one with the flag, bottom-left of the keyboard) and tap the letter R. A small box appears. Type msinfo32 and press Enter. Read the line labeled System Model — that is your full model number, such as 21MS0067US — and the line labeled Processor. Write both down and you are ready to get a quote.
02 My ThinkBook looks just like the pictures — how do I make sure it is not a different generation?
This is the most common mix-up we see, because Lenovo reused the same chassis for several years. Photos will not tell you apart; the processor name and the four-character machine type will. Here is the diagnostic test for each look-alike:

ThinkBook 16 Gen 6 (21KH / 21KK) — visually identical. Its processor is a 13th-gen Core i5-1335U or i7-1355U, or a Ryzen 5 7530U / Ryzen 7 7730U. If you see "Core i" instead of "Core Ultra," it is a Gen 6.

ThinkBook 16 Gen 8 (21SH) and Gen 9 (21UT) — later refreshes. Check the machine type prefix on the bottom label: 21SH and 21UT are not Gen 7.

ThinkBook 14 Gen 7 (21MR / 21MV) — same generation, same finish, but 14 inches and no number pad to the right of the keyboard. If your keyboard has a numeric keypad, you have the 16.

ThinkBook 16p Gen 5 / Gen 6 — the "p" models are thicker, heavier, and carry a discrete NVIDIA GeForce or RTX sticker near the palm rest with large rear exhaust vents. The standard Gen 7 has no NVIDIA graphics at all.

ThinkPad E16 or L16 — black rather than grey, says ThinkPad on the lid, and has a small red pointing nub between the G, H, and B keys.

Intel vs. AMD within Gen 7 — look at the two USB-C ports on the left side. If one has a small lightning-bolt symbol next to it, you have the Intel 21MS. If neither does, you have the AMD 21MW. A Cosmic Blue finish also means AMD, since Intel models were Arctic Grey only.
03 Will you still buy it if the screen is cracked, the battery is dead, or it has other defects?
Yes, we buy these in almost every working state: Mint condition, scuffed, swollen battery, cracked chassis, broken hinge, dead keyboard backlight, missing keycaps, or even not powering on at all. Just grade the condition honestly in the tool above, and the offer adjusts accordingly; an accurate description is what keeps your offer from changing at inspection.

04 How do I wipe my data, and how and when do I get paid?
Back up anything you want to keep to an external drive or to OneDrive first, then sign out of your Microsoft account and any password manager. To reset the laptop, go to Settings → System → Recovery → Reset this PC, choose Remove everything, and select Remove files and clean the drive for the most thorough wipe. You do not need to unscrew the bottom cover or pull the M.2 SSD out yourself — every drive that reaches us undergoes certified data sanitization, regardless of what you do beforehand. Details are on our data erasure protocols page.

If this was a work laptop, there are extra steps. ThinkBooks are frequently enrolled in corporate management, so before resetting, confirm with your IT department that you are cleared to sell the device, and ask them to remove it from Microsoft Intune, Windows Autopilot, or any MDM enrollment, and to clear any BIOS supervisor or hard disk password. A device still tied to Autopilot will keep re-enrolling itself after a reset. Our guide on selling a work laptop and removing corporate data covers the full checklist, and the pre-sale transition checklist helps you move everything to your new machine first.

Once your laptop arrives and passes inspection, payment is issued within about two business days. You can be paid via PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, Cash App, or by a physical check mailed to your address. Shipping is free: We provide a prepaid label. See the shipping instructions for packing tips.
