The MSI Katana GF66 is a budget-focused 15.6-inch gaming laptop that ran across two generations: the 11-series (11th Gen Intel "Tiger Lake-H", 2021–2022) and the 12-series (12th Gen Intel "Alder Lake", 2022). Both share the same black, angular chassis with a red-backlit keyboard and Cooler Boost 5 twin-fan cooling, and both pair Intel H-series processors with NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30-series graphics. The single most important thing to get right on this model is the suffix letters in the model code (like 11UE or 12UC) — those letters tell you which graphics card is inside, and the GPU is the biggest driver of your resale value. Select your exact configuration and condition using our tool above to see an instant cash offer. Not sure which Katana you have? The steps below make it simple.

First: read your Katana GF66 model code

Every Katana GF66 has a model code printed on a sticker on the underside of the laptop. It looks like GF66 11UE or GF66 12UC, usually followed by a dash and three more numbers (e.g. 11UE-879). You only need the first part. The two digits tell you the generation, and the two letters after them tell you the graphics card:

Step 1 — Generation (the number)

  • 11 = 11th Gen Intel, released 2021–2022
  • 12 = 12th Gen Intel, released 2022

Step 2 — Graphics (the letters)

  • UC = NVIDIA RTX 3050
  • UD = NVIDIA RTX 3050 Ti
  • UE = NVIDIA RTX 3060
  • UG = NVIDIA RTX 3070 (11-series only)

Example: a sticker reading GF66 12UE is a 2022 (12th Gen) model with an RTX 3060. On Windows you can also confirm the full code by pressing the Windows key, typing System Information, and reading the "System Model" line. Our MSI model-number guide shows this with pictures.

Make sure it's a GF66 — not a look-alike

❌ Katana GF76

Same design but a bigger 17.3-inch screen. If your display measures 17", you have the GF76, not the GF66.

❌ MSI Sword 15

The Sword is the Katana's twin with nearly identical internals but a white/blue chassis instead of black. Check the color and the printed name.

❌ Katana 15 (newer)

The later Katana 15 (B12 / B13 codes, RTX 40-series) is a different, newer model. The GF66 uses RTX 30-series only.

✅ It's a GF66 if…

The sticker reads Katana GF66 with an 11xx or 12xx code, the screen is 15.6", and the chassis is black.

Core hardware configurations

Processor (CPU)

  • 11-series: Intel Core i5-11400H (6c/12t) or i7-11800H (8c/16t), up to 4.6 GHz (Tiger Lake-H)
  • 12-series: Intel Core i5-12500H or i7-12700H (up to 14 cores / 20 threads), up to 4.7 GHz (Alder Lake)

Graphics (GPU) — set by suffix

  • UC: RTX 3050 — 4GB GDDR6
  • UD: RTX 3050 Ti — 4GB GDDR6
  • UE: RTX 3060 — 6GB GDDR6 (up to 105W with Dynamic Boost)
  • UG: RTX 3070 — 8GB GDDR6 (11-series only)

Memory (RAM)

  • DDR4-3200 in two SO-DIMM slots
  • Factory 8GB or 16GB; user-upgradable up to 64GB

Storage

  • M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD — 256GB / 512GB / 1TB shipping capacities (12-series uses faster Gen4x4)
  • Storage expansion varies by GPU tier: UE/UG models have two M.2 slots; UC/UD models have one M.2 slot plus a 2.5" SATA bay. On the UG (RTX 3070), the larger battery occupies the space that would otherwise hold a 2.5" drive.

Display & audio

Display

15.6-inch Full HD (1920 × 1080) IPS-level panel at 144Hz. This is a fast panel aimed at esports and mainstream gaming; color coverage is modest (around 45% NTSC / ~62% sRGB), so it is a high-refresh gaming screen rather than a color-accurate creator panel. There is no 4K, no OLED, and no touchscreen option on this line.

Audio

Dual 2W stereo speakers with Nahimic 3 audio and Hi-Res Audio support.

Ports & connectivity

Left / Rear
  • 1× USB-C (USB 3.2 Gen 1 — this is NOT Thunderbolt; no Thunderbolt on any GF66)
  • 1× HDMI (supports 4K @ 60Hz)
  • 1× RJ-45 Gigabit Ethernet (LAN)
  • 1× DC-in power
Right / Extras
  • 2× USB-A 3.2 Gen 1
  • 1× USB-A 2.0
  • 1× 3.5mm headphone/microphone combo jack

Please note: the Katana GF66 has no SD or microSD card reader and no Thunderbolt port — features some sellers expect but that this model does not have. It charges via a barrel DC plug (adapter wattage scales with the GPU: roughly 120W on RTX 3050 configs up to 240W on RTX 3060/3070 configs).

Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201 Bluetooth 5.1 / 5.2 Cooler Boost 5 twin-fan

Battery, build & more

Battery & charging

3-cell 53.5Wh battery on most configs, charged via a barrel DC adapter (no USB-C charging). The RTX 3070 (UG) configuration ships with a larger-capacity battery, which is why it loses the extra 2.5" drive bay.

Camera & mic

Integrated 720p HD webcam with a built-in microphone.

Keyboard

Full-size red single-color backlit keyboard with anti-ghosting and a numeric keypad (99-key layout).

Cooling

Cooler Boost 5 with two fans. Higher tiers (RTX 3060 / 3070) use up to six copper heat pipes; RTX 3050 / 3050 Ti tiers use four.

Weight

≈ 2.1–2.25 kg (4.6–4.96 lb) depending on generation and configuration.

Dimensions

≈ 359 × 259 × 24.9 mm (14.1" × 10.2" × 0.98").

Frequently asked questions

01 How do I find my exact Katana GF66 model and graphics card?
Flip the laptop over and read the printed label on the bottom cover. You'll see a code like GF66 11UE or GF66 12UC. The two numbers are the generation (11 = 2021–22, 12 = 2022), and the two letters are the graphics card: UC = RTX 3050, UD = RTX 3050 Ti, UE = RTX 3060, UG = RTX 3070. That's all you need to pick the right configuration above. If the sticker is worn, press the Windows key, type "System Information," and read the "System Model" line. Our MSI model-number guide and general find-your-gadget guide walk through it with pictures.
02 How do I make sure it's a GF66 and not a GF76, Sword 15, or Katana 15?
Three quick checks. First, screen size: the GF66 is 15.6 inches. If yours is 17.3", it's the Katana GF76, a different page. Second, color: MSI's Sword 15 uses the same internals as the Katana but comes in a white and blue shell instead of black, so read the printed product name, not just the specs. Third, generation: the newer Katana 15 (with codes like B12 or B13 and RTX 40-series graphics) is a separate, later laptop — the GF66 only ever used RTX 30-series cards. Picking the wrong model can change your quote and cause a mismatch at inspection, so confirm the "Katana GF66" name and the 15.6" black chassis before submitting.
03 Can I sell a Katana GF66 with wear, a weak battery, or a cracked screen?
Yes. We buy the GF66 in every condition, from like-new to heavily used. Whether yours runs perfectly, has loud or grinding fans, a battery that no longer holds a charge, worn keycaps, a cracked screen, or won't power on at all, just select the matching condition options above and your quote adjusts automatically. Gaming laptops hold value well even with cosmetic or functional issues, so it's always worth getting the estimate before assuming yours is worthless.
04 Which specs raise my GF66 value the most — and did you know we buy laptops directly for cash?
Many people don't realize that Gadget Salvation runs a full online trade-in / buyback service — you skip marketplace listings, lowball offers, and meetups entirely. You get an instant quote here, ship the laptop with a free prepaid label, and get paid in real cash. On value, the biggest factor by far is the graphics card: a UG (RTX 3070) or UE (RTX 3060) is worth substantially more than a UC (RTX 3050) or UD (RTX 3050 Ti). After that, the generation (a 12-series beats an 11-series), an i7 processor, more RAM, and a larger SSD all lift the final number. If you'd like more context before selling, our blog covers how to sell a gaming laptop and compare buyback platforms. Ready to go? Start a gaming laptop quote here or read how it works.
05 Should I wipe my data first, and how do I get paid?
Back up anything you want to keep — game saves, documents, photos — to an external drive or the cloud, then sign out of your Windows/Microsoft account and ideally run a factory reset before shipping. Our step-by-step MSI factory reset guide walks you through it (MSI laptops use the F3 recovery partition). You do not need to remove the M.2 SSD yourself; our team performs certified, multi-pass data sanitization on every incoming drive — details are on our data erasure protocols page. Once your laptop arrives and passes inspection, payment is approved within about two business days via PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, CashApp, or a mailed check. The prepaid shipping label is free and fully insured.
