Microsoft's $1,000 MacBook Trade-In Offer: What It's Actually Worth
Microsoft is offering up to $1,000 cash back to MacBook Pro owners who switch to a Surface Laptop Ultra. It is a bonus on top of a trade-in quote, not a payout, and it requires buying a $2,599.99 laptop. Here is what Microsoft's trade-in tool actually quotes, next to our cash offers for the same machines.

Microsoft wants your MacBook Pro badly enough to pay a $1,000 bonus for it. Before you box yours up, it is worth understanding what that number is attached to — because for most MacBook Pros, it is not the number you will see.
What Microsoft is actually offering
The pitch, reported on 10 October 2026, asks MacBook Pro owners to "break up with your MacBook". The mechanics behind it:
- The $1,000 is a bonus, not a price. It sits on top of whatever Microsoft's trade-in tool quotes for your laptop. It is not the trade-in value itself.
- It is tied to a purchase. The bonus applies when your device and your purchase qualify, and the purchase in question is a Surface Laptop Ultra — preorders from $2,599.99, shipping from 16 October 2026.
- It is paid after inspection. Microsoft pays the total once it has received and evaluated the laptop. If the device arrives in worse shape than described, the offer can be reduced; you can then accept the revised figure or have the MacBook sent back.
- "Up to" is doing a lot of work. Reported quotes from Microsoft's own value finder range from $45 to $2,115 depending on the model.
That last point is the one worth sitting with. The same programme that headlines $1,000 reportedly quoted $45 for a 2020 13-inch MacBook Pro, and one journalist was offered $32.37 for a base 12-inch MacBook.
How the numbers compare
Here are Microsoft's reported quotes next to our cash offers for the same configurations. Ours assume a fully functional laptop in flawless cosmetic condition with the charger included, quoted on 19 October 2026.
| MacBook Pro | Microsoft trade-in quote | Our cash offer |
|---|---|---|
| 13-inch (2020), 8GB / 256GB | $45 | $144 (Intel i5) – $175 (M1) |
| 14-inch (2023), M3, 8GB / 512GB | $275 | $542 |
| 14-inch (2024), M4, 16GB / 1TB | $755 | $758 |
| 16-inch, M5 Max, 128GB / 4TB | $2,115 | $2,250 |
We pay more than Microsoft's trade-in tool on three of the four configurations it has been reported quoting, and we do it without asking you to buy anything.
On older machines it is not close. A 2020 13-inch Pro is worth three to four times more to us than to Microsoft's trade-in tool. A 2023 M3 is worth roughly double. These are the machines most people are actually selling.
On the current 14-inch M4 we are level. $758 against $755 — near enough identical, except that ours arrives as cash and theirs is contingent on a $2,599.99 purchase.
On a top-spec 16-inch, Microsoft's quote is still higher. Their reported $2,115 beats our $1,950 for the same 128GB / 4TB machine in flawless condition. In brand-new condition ours comes to $2,048, which closes most of the gap but not all of it. If that is your laptop and you want the Surface, their deal is genuinely hard to beat, and we would rather tell you that than pretend otherwise.
The most we pay for any MacBook today is $2,090, for a 16-inch M5 Max with 128GB of memory and 8TB of storage in brand-new condition. We publish the ceiling because every quote on our site is a real figure for a real configuration, not a headline.
The $1,000 question
The honest way to read Microsoft's promotion is as a discount on a $2,599.99 laptop, not as a payout for your MacBook. Those are different products:
- If you want a Surface Laptop Ultra, the bonus is real money and you should take it seriously. Spending $2,599.99 to collect $1,000 only makes sense if you wanted the $2,599.99 laptop first.
- If you want cash, or you are staying with a Mac, the bonus is worth exactly nothing to you, and what is left is a trade-in quote that starts at $45.
One detail the reporting does not settle: whether Microsoft's base trade-in value arrives as cash or as store credit. Worth confirming before you commit, because it changes what the deal is.
What we do differently
- Cash, with nothing to buy. PayPal, Venmo, Zelle or a mailed check. You are not required to purchase anything, from us or anyone else.
- A quote you can see before you ship. Our calculator prices your exact configuration — chip, memory, storage, cosmetic condition — on the page, before you commit to anything.
- Free shipping, and a return if you disagree. We send a prepaid UPS label. If our inspection comes back different from your description, we tell you what changed and you decide. If you decline, your MacBook goes back at no cost.
- We buy machines Microsoft's tool barely values. Older Intel Pros, cracked screens, dead batteries, units that will not power on. A $45 quote on a working 2020 Pro suggests where that programme's interest ends.
Frequently asked questions
Is Microsoft really paying $1,000 for a MacBook Pro?
Not for the MacBook itself. The $1,000 is a promotional bonus added on top of Microsoft's trade-in quote, and it requires buying a Surface Laptop Ultra, which starts at $2,599.99. The trade-in quotes themselves have been reported between $45 and $2,115 depending on the model.
Will you beat Microsoft's trade-in offer on my MacBook Pro?
On older and mid-range machines, usually by a wide margin — two to four times their quote on the examples above. On a current 14-inch M4 we come out level. On a top-spec 16-inch M5 Max their reported quote is still ahead of ours. Run your exact configuration through our calculator and compare; it takes about a minute and costs nothing.
What is the most you will pay for a MacBook Pro?
$2,090, for a 16-inch M5 Max with 128GB of memory and 8TB of storage in brand-new condition with the charger. Every configuration below that is priced on the product page.
Do I have to buy anything to sell you my MacBook?
No. We buy the laptop for cash and you spend nothing. There is no purchase, no credit and no store to spend it in.
Can the offer change after you inspect it?
It can, if the device does not match the description — the same condition Microsoft attaches to its own programme. We tell you what we found and what it changes. You can accept the revised offer or have the MacBook shipped back to you free of charge.
Microsoft's promotion is a real offer and, for the right buyer, a good one. It is just not a MacBook payout — it is a Surface discount wearing one. If what you want is cash for the laptop you already own, get an instant quote for your MacBook Pro and compare the two numbers yourself.
