In response to reports of property damage and dangerous chemical leaks from Samsung Galaxy Note 7 units that spontaneously exploded, Samsung is actively recalling units with major battery defects.

Samsung claims that only a small number of devices have experienced the problem , and not the estimated 2.5 million units made and released. But based on tech review and vendors who sell electronics, there is no official report on the total number of global incidents from Samsung Yet.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has made Samsung´s recall official. The phones could not be sold legally in Canada, Mexico, and other countries where they have issued formal bans. Reports say that some airline companies have also banned the use of the said Samsung model on their planes.

Some countries allow the exchange of flawed Note 7 phones for non-defective units, but Samsung may still not see any new sales in the coming weeks.

How to Exchange Your Note 7

Samsung will return the money you spent on your Note 7 and assist you in swapping it with the new model. Each region varies in terms of its return and exchange programs. Check with the local Samsung branches or via the company’s website for the complete info. But so far, here are some details about the current exchange programs:

  • In the US, Samsung has been given the green light to restock replacement units by September 21. According to Samsung, about 25% has already exchanged their devices (a majority still opted for another Samsung model)
  • In the UK: The exchange program started on September 19
  • In Australia, the exchange program began on September 21
  • In Singapore: Appointment bookings ended on September 25. The exchange period is from September 16 to October 2.
  • In the Philippines, the exchange begins on October 2.

Is the Note 7 Problem Resolved?

Samsung announced that the Note 7 units sold after September 15 are safe to use. Samsung is now working with various government agencies worldwide for the transition to the new Note 7 models.

The new units now come with a software update that displays a green battery icon instead of a white one to indicate they are new and unaffected. Samsung also provides a tool to help users search for their phone’s unique IMEI number so they can check if their battery is faulty or is part of a new batch. Find out more about the IMEI. Read up and research how to use it.

More Updates on the Note 7 Recall

According to Samsung, half of the defective lot with faulty, exploding batteries is now out of consumers’ hands in the US.

Two days after the incident reports, Samsung has shipped about 500, 000 Galaxy Note 7 replacement units to retailers in the US. This batch is to replace the one million units that have been sold. Samsung claims that only half of the current Note 7 owners in the US have claimed the replacements and returned their Note 7’s.

Samsung reports that the majority of people who exchanged their units opted for the new Note 7 rather than receiving a refund.
