The Lenovo ThinkPad P16s is a thin-and-light 16-inch mobile workstation — an ISV-certified machine built for engineers, architects, designers, and students running software like AutoCAD, Revit, and SolidWorks, yet light enough to carry all day. It has been sold across three generations between 2022 and 2024, and in each generation it came in two versions: an Intel model (branded “P16s i”) and an AMD model. That means identifying both your generation and your processor brand is the most important step before requesting a quote, because a 2022 Gen 1 and a 2024 Gen 3 are worth quite different amounts. Because the P16s was also highly configurable — different processors, integrated or professional NVIDIA graphics, memory, storage, and display panels including a 4K OLED — your exact configuration decides its final resale price. If you're looking to sell your ThinkPad P16s, our Lenovo ThinkPad trade-in page gives you a real cash offer — just pick your components using the tool above to see an instant quote for your exact device.

First: which P16s generation (and Intel or AMD) do you have?

The three generations look almost identical from the outside, so the reliable way to tell them apart is by the processor. Press the Windows key, type “System Information,” open it, and read the Processor line, then match it to the cards below. (The processor name also tells you instantly whether you have the Intel or AMD version.)

P16s Gen 1 (2022)

Intel: Core i5-1240P/1250P or i7-1260P/1270P/1280P (12th Gen). AMD: Ryzen 5 Pro 6650U or Ryzen 7 Pro 6850U (Ryzen 6000). The original P16s.

P16s Gen 2 (2023)

Intel: Core i5-1340P/1350P or i7-1360P/1370P (13th Gen). AMD: Ryzen 5 Pro 7540U/7545U or Ryzen 7 Pro 7840U (Ryzen 7040).

P16s Gen 3 (2024)

Intel: Core Ultra 5 135H, Ultra 7 155H/165H, or Ultra 9 185H (Core Ultra Series 1, with an AI NPU). AMD: Ryzen AI / Ryzen Pro 8040 series. The newest and generally most valuable.

  • AMD models: integrated AMD Radeon graphics (660M / 680M / 740M / 780M by generation)

Memory (RAM)

  • Offered from 8GB up to 64GB (DDR5 / LPDDR5 / LPDDR5x by version)
  • Partly or fully soldered — most AMD models have all memory soldered (not upgradable); many Intel models have some soldered memory plus one SO-DIMM slot. Check your exact model before assuming it can be upgraded

Storage

  • M.2 2280 PCIe Gen4 NVMe Solid State Drive (SSD)
  • 256GB / 512GB / 1TB / 2TB shipping capacities
  • Single M.2 slot — the SSD is replaceable, and is the main user-upgradeable part on this machine

Make sure it's a P16s (and not a P16, P16v, or other ThinkPad)

Lenovo's ThinkPad workstation range has several similar-sounding names, so a quick check keeps you from picking the wrong product. The two cards below cover this model and the ones it's most often confused with.

This model — ThinkPad P16s

The label reads “P16s” (the Intel version may say “P16s i”). It's the thin and light 16-inch workstation — around 3.8–4.2 lb — with low-profile integrated or entry NVIDIA professional graphics. The little “s” stands for the slim version.

Not this one — the bigger workstations

The ThinkPad P16 and P16v are thicker, heavier, more powerful workstations (with HX-class CPUs and higher NVIDIA RTX graphics) — if yours is notably heavy, it's likely one of those. The P1, T16, and P14s are other adjacent ThinkPads. And the newer P16s Gen 4 (2025) is a later model. If your label shows any of those names, pick that model when you request a quote.

Where to look: the exact name (e.g. “ThinkPad P16s Gen 2”) and the machine type model (MTM) number are printed on the label on the bottom cover. You can also open the Start menu, type “System Information,” and read the System Model line. Our guide to finding your laptop's model number shows exactly where to find it.

Display & audio

Display

A 16-inch, 16:10 aspect-ratio panel (taller than a standard widescreen, great for documents and CAD). Options range from a WUXGA (1920 × 1200) IPS panel at 300 or 400 nits, up to a stunning WQUXGA 4K (3840 × 2400) OLED with 100% DCI-P3 color and 400 nits. Touchscreen was available on some configurations. The 4K OLED panel typically fetches a higher trade-in value, so it's worth noting which one you have.

Audio & camera

Stereo speakers with Dolby Audio and dual far-field microphones. Webcam is a 720p HD or (Gen 2 onward) a 5MP camera, most with an infrared sensor for Windows Hello face sign-in and a physical privacy shutter.

Ports & connectivity

A practical business port set. The P16s charges over USB-C using its included adapter (65–100 W depending on configuration) — there is no separate barrel charger. One key difference: the Intel models have Thunderbolt 4, while the AMD models use USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 (Gen 1) or USB4 (Gen 2 onward) instead.

Left Side
  • 2× USB-C (Thunderbolt 4 on Intel models; USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 / USB4 on AMD models — both support charging and DisplayPort)
  • 1× HDMI (2.0b / 2.1 by generation)
Right Side
  • 2× USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 (one Always On for charging devices)
  • 1× Gigabit Ethernet (RJ-45)
  • 1× 3.5mm headphone/microphone combo jack
  • Optional smart card reader on select models

Wi-Fi 6 / 6E Bluetooth 5.1–5.3 Optional 4G/5G WWAN

Battery, build & more

Battery & charging

A 52.5 Whr or 86 Whr integrated battery depending on configuration, charged over USB-C with the bundled 65 W or 100 W adapter. Rapid Charge tops it up quickly; there is no barrel charging port.

Security & sign-in

Fingerprint reader (in the power button on most models), optional IR camera for Windows Hello face sign-in, a webcam privacy shutter, and a discrete TPM 2.0 security chip — standard ThinkPad business security.

Keyboard & input

Spill-resistant backlit ThinkPad keyboard with a full numeric keypad, the red TrackPoint pointing stick, and a wide glass Precision touchpad with physical mouse buttons.

Build & design

Classic black ThinkPad chassis, MIL-STD-810H durability tested, made with a high percentage of post-consumer recycled materials, and ISV-certified for professional design software.

Weight

≈ 1.7–1.9 kg (about 3.8–4.2 lb), varying by configuration.

Dimensions

≈ 361.9 × 255.9 × 18.9–22.4 mm (14.25" × 10.07" × 0.74"–0.88").

Frequently asked questions

01 How do I tell which P16s generation and version (Intel or AMD) I have?
The processor tells you both at once. Press the Windows key, type “System Information,” open it, and read the Processor line. If it starts with Intel, you have the “P16s i” version; if it starts with AMD Ryzen, you have the AMD version. Then match the model number to the generation: an Intel 1240P/1260P/1280P or AMD Ryzen 6850U is Gen 1 (2022); a 1340P/1360P or Ryzen 7840U is Gen 2 (2023); and a Core Ultra chip or Ryzen AI is Gen 3 (2024). You can also flip the laptop over and read “ThinkPad P16s Gen X” printed on the bottom label. Our find-your-processor guide walks through it with pictures.
02 Is the P16s the same as the ThinkPad P16, P16v, or P1?
No — and it's an easy mix-up because the names are so similar. The P16s is the thin-and-light workstation (the “s” means slim), weighing about 3.8–4.2 lb with integrated or entry professional graphics. The ThinkPad P16 and P16v are much bigger, heavier, more powerful workstations built around HX-class processors and higher-tier NVIDIA RTX graphics — if yours is thick and heavy, it's probably one of those. The P1 is a separate premium workstation, and the T16 and P14s are other related ThinkPads. Also note the newer P16s Gen 4 (2025). If your label shows any of those names instead of “P16s Gen 1/2/3,” pick that model when you request your quote so your offer is accurate.
03 Can I sell a P16s that has wear, an upgraded SSD, or hardware issues?
Yes. We buy these mobile workstations in all working conditions. Whether yours is like-new, has scuffs on the chassis, a worn keyboard, a battery that no longer holds a charge, or a cracked screen, just set the matching condition options above and your offer updates to a firm cash value. Because the M.2 SSD is user-replaceable, it's completely fine if yours has been changed from the factory build — just select the storage that's actually installed now so your offer reflects the real hardware.
04 How does the trade-in process work, and did you know this is an option?
Many people don't realize they can sell a business laptop like this directly for cash instead of letting it sit in a drawer after an upgrade, or dealing with buyers on a marketplace. Here's how it works with us: pick your generation, configuration, and condition above to get an instant quote, accept it, and we email you a free, fully insured prepaid shipping label. Box up your ThinkPad P16s, drop it off, and once it arrives and our team confirms the configuration and condition, your payment is approved — typically within about two business days. You can get paid by PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, or CashApp, or by a mailed physical check. If you'd like to read more first, our step-by-step guide to selling a used laptop online and our post on what your laptop is worth walk through it. You can also browse other Lenovo laptops we buy or all PC laptops.
05 Should I wipe my data or remove the SSD before shipping?
We recommend backing up anything you want to keep to an external drive or the cloud, then signing out of your Microsoft or company account and doing a factory reset (Windows Settings → System → Recovery → Reset this PC) before you ship. If your P16s was managed by an employer, make sure it has been released from any company management or BitLocker lock first. You do not need to open the laptop or remove the M.2 SSD yourself — our team runs certified, multi-pass data sanitization on every drive we receive. You can read exactly how we handle it on our data erasure protocols page.
