The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon is the flagship 14-inch business ultrabook of the ThinkPad line, and this page covers six consecutive generations: Gen 7 (2019), Gen 8 (2020), Gen 9 (2021), Gen 10 (2022), Gen 11 (2023), and Gen 12 (2024). Every one of them pairs a carbon-fiber lid with a magnesium or aluminum base, weighs roughly two and a half pounds, and carries a MIL-STD-810 durability rating — which is exactly why so many of them are still in circulation years after their corporate leases ended. If you are looking to sell your X1 Carbon, our ThinkPad trade-in service pays cash for all six of these generations in any working or non-working condition. The catch when pricing one is that these generations look almost identical from across a desk, and the memory is soldered to the motherboard on every single one — so the exact generation and the exact factory RAM amount drive most of the value. Use the identification steps below to pin down which one you have, then select your components in the tool above for an instant cash offer.

How to identify your ThinkPad X1 Carbon generation

Lenovo does not print "Gen 9" or "Gen 11" anywhere on the outside of the laptop. What it does print is a machine type — a four-character code that maps to exactly one generation. Flip the laptop over and read the white sticker on the bottom cover. You are looking for a line that begins with "Type" followed by four characters, then a longer serial. The first four characters are all you need.

✅ Gen 7 — machine type 20QD or 20QE

  • Released 2019
  • Widescreen 16:9 display (short and wide)
  • Square fingerprint reader on the palm rest, to the right of the touchpad
  • Has a narrow rectangular Ethernet extension connector on the left side, beside the USB-C ports
  • 8th or 10th generation Intel Core i5/i7 (model numbers like i7-8565U or i7-10710U)

✅ Gen 12 — machine type 21KC or 21KD

  • Released 2024
  • Power button moved off the keyboard deck and onto the right-hand edge of the chassis — the fastest visual tell of this generation
  • Fingerprint reader relocated into a keyboard key
  • Intel Core Ultra processors (Core Ultra 5 125U, 125H, 135U; Core Ultra 7 155U, 155H, 165U, 165H)
  • Slightly smaller and lighter than Gen 10 and Gen 11; some units have a haptic touchpad with no physical click

Can't read the sticker? Worn bottom labels are extremely common on ex-corporate ThinkPads. Turn the laptop on, press the Windows key, type msinfo32 and press Enter. The System Model line will show your machine type and a full model code such as 21HM002GUS or 20XW003EUS. Our guide to finding a Lenovo model number walks through this step by step, and the processor identification guide covers reading your exact CPU if the generation is still unclear.

Memory (RAM) — soldered on every generation

  • Gen 7 & Gen 8: 8GB or 16GB LPDDR3-2133
  • Gen 9: 8GB, 16GB or 32GB LPDDR4x-4266
  • Gen 10: 8GB, 16GB or 32GB LPDDR5-5200
  • Gen 11: 16GB, 32GB or 64GB LPDDR5/LPDDR5x
  • Gen 12: 16GB, 32GB or 64GB LPDDR5x-6400
  • There are no memory slots on any X1 Carbon. The RAM is soldered directly to the motherboard and cannot be added to or replaced. Whatever the laptop shipped with is what it will have forever, which makes the factory RAM figure one of the biggest single factors in resale value.

Storage

  • One M.2 2280 NVMe solid state drive — a single slot, no second drive bay on any generation
  • Gen 7 & Gen 8: PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe (a small number of early Gen 7 units shipped with slower SATA drives)
  • Gen 9 through Gen 12: PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe
  • Common capacities: 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, up to 2TB
  • Most units use Opal 2.0 self-encrypting drives
  • Unlike the memory, the SSD is replaceable — an aftermarket drive swap does not hurt your offer

Graphics

  • No discrete graphics card on any X1 Carbon generation. All six generations rely on integrated graphics built into the processor.
  • Gen 7 & Gen 8: Intel UHD Graphics
  • Gen 9, 10 & 11: Intel Iris Xe Graphics
  • Gen 12: Intel Graphics on U-series chips, Intel Arc Graphics on H-series chips

Display & audio

Display — Gen 7 & Gen 8 (16:9)

14-inch panels in the older widescreen 16:9 shape. Options included FHD 1920×1080 IPS at 300, 400 or 500 nits, a WQHD 2560×1440 IPS panel, and a UHD 3840×2160 IPS panel with Dolby Vision and DisplayHDR 400. A ThinkPad Privacy Guard version was also offered, which narrows the viewing angle at the touch of a key so people beside you cannot read the screen. Touch was optional and most units are non-touch.

Display — Gen 9, 10 & 11 (16:10)

14-inch panels switched to the taller 16:10 shape, which gives noticeably more vertical room for documents. The standard option is WUXGA 1920×1200 IPS at 400 nits with 100% sRGB coverage. Higher tiers include a 500-nit Privacy Guard WUXGA panel, a 2.2K 2240×1400 IPS panel (Gen 10 and 11), a WQUXGA 3840×2400 IPS panel with DisplayHDR 400 and Dolby Vision (Gen 9 and 10), and from Gen 10 onward a 2.8K 2880×1800 OLED panel with DisplayHDR True Black 500.

Display — Gen 12 (16:10)

14-inch 16:10 panels with an 89.2% screen-to-body ratio. Options are WUXGA 1920×1200 IPS at 400 nits, a 500-nit Privacy Guard WUXGA panel, and a 2.8K 2880×1800 OLED panel running at 120Hz with DisplayHDR True Black 500 and full DCI-P3 coverage. The WQUXGA and 2.2K IPS options from earlier generations were dropped.

OLED burn-in — worth checking before you quote

If your Gen 10, Gen 11 or Gen 12 has the 2.8K OLED panel, take a moment to display a solid light gray image full screen and look for faint permanent shadows where the Windows taskbar, Teams sidebar or Outlook panes normally sit. OLED panels are prone to this after heavy static use, and it is a condition factor rather than something a factory reset fixes. IPS panels are not affected.

Audio

Gen 7 through Gen 11 use a four-speaker system — two 2W woofers and two 0.8W tweeters — tuned for Dolby Atmos. Gen 12 simplified this to a two-speaker 2W stereo setup. Microphones are a quad-array with 360° far-field pickup on Gen 7 through Gen 11 (with Dolby Voice from Gen 9 onward), reduced to a dual-array far-field setup on Gen 12.

Webcam

Every generation includes a physical privacy shutter, branded ThinkShutter on Gen 7 and Gen 8. Gen 7, 8 and 9 use a 720p HD camera with an optional infrared sensor for Windows Hello face unlock. Gen 10 and Gen 11 added 1080p options alongside the 720p base camera. Gen 12 dropped 720p entirely, shipping with either a 1080p or an 8MP UHD camera, both paired with infrared.

Ports & connectivity

The port layout changed meaningfully between Gen 8 and Gen 9, and again at Gen 12. This is one of the most reliable ways to confirm which generation you are holding without hunting for the sticker.

Gen 7 & Gen 8
  • 2× USB-C Thunderbolt 3 (data, power delivery and DisplayPort 1.2)
  • 2× USB-A 3.2 Gen 1, one of them Always On for charging phones while the laptop sleeps
  • 1× HDMI 1.4b
  • 1× Ethernet extension connector (a proprietary slot sitting directly beside the USB-C ports — it is NOT a standard RJ-45 network jack and requires a dedicated Lenovo dongle that is frequently missing on used units)
  • 1× 3.5mm headphone and microphone combo jack
  • 1× Side docking connector
  • 1× Kensington Security Slot (full size)
Gen 9 through Gen 12
  • 2× USB-C Thunderbolt 4 / USB4 40Gbps (data, power delivery 3.0 and DisplayPort — 1.4a on Gen 9 to 11, 2.1 on Gen 12)
  • 2× USB-A 3.2 Gen 1, one Always On
  • 1× HDMI (HDMI 2.0 on Gen 9; HDMI 2.1 up to 4K/60Hz on Gen 10, 11 and 12)
  • 1× 3.5mm headphone and microphone combo jack
  • 1× Kensington Nano Security Slot (the smaller 2.5 × 6mm type)
  • No Ethernet extension connector and no side docking connector — both were removed at Gen 9

Features no X1 Carbon has, in any generation: there is no SD or microSD card reader, no onboard RJ-45 Ethernet jack, no smart card reader, no optical drive, no pen or stylus support, and no discrete graphics card. Gen 9 through Gen 12 have no wired networking of any kind without a USB-C adapter. Please don't assume a missing feature means a fault — none of these were ever fitted.

Gen 7: Wi-Fi 5 (AC 9560) + BT 5.1 Gen 8 & 9: Wi-Fi 6 (AX201) + BT 5.1 Gen 10: Wi-Fi 6 or 6E Gen 11: Wi-Fi 6E (AX211) + BT 5.3 Gen 12: Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 Optional 4G LTE / 5G WWAN

Battery, build & more

Battery & charging

Gen 7 and Gen 8 use an integrated 51Wh lithium-polymer battery. Gen 9 through Gen 12 increased this to 57Wh. All six generations charge over USB-C using a 45W or 65W power adapter and support Rapid Charge, reaching roughly 80% in an hour with the 65W unit. There is no barrel-style charging port on any generation — any USB-C PD charger of adequate wattage will work if the original is missing.

Dimensions & weight

Gen 7 & 8: 323 × 217 × 14.95mm, from 1.09kg (2.4 lbs); Privacy Guard units are 15.4mm and 1.21kg (2.66 lbs).
Gen 9: 315 × 221.6 × 14.9mm, from 1.13kg (2.49 lbs).
Gen 10 & 11: 315.6 × 222.5 × 14.96–15.36mm, from 1.12kg (2.48 lbs).
Gen 12: 312.8 × 214.75 × 14.96mm, from 1.08kg (2.37 lbs).

Build materials

Carbon fiber reinforced lid on every generation, available in either a plain painted black finish or a textured woven carbon weave. The bottom cover is magnesium alloy on Gen 7, Gen 8 and Gen 9, switching to aluminum from Gen 10 onward. All six generations passed MIL-STD-810 testing — 810G for Gen 7 and Gen 8, the newer 810H standard from Gen 9 onward.

Keyboard & pointing devices

Six-row spill-resistant backlit keyboard with the red TrackPoint nub between the G, H and B keys — present on all six generations. Gen 7 through Gen 11 use a glass three-button trackpad measuring 56 × 110mm (Gen 10 and 11) with physical click buttons above it. Gen 12 offers either a larger 56.2 × 120mm three-button trackpad or an optional 70.5 × 120mm haptic touchpad with no moving parts. Note that on Gen 12, the haptic touchpad and NFC are mutually exclusive — a unit cannot have both.

Security & manageability

Discrete TPM 2.0 across all generations, FIPS 140-2 certified from Gen 10 onward. Fingerprint reader placement is a generation tell: palm rest on Gen 7 and Gen 8, integrated into the power button on Gen 9 through Gen 11, and moved into a keyboard key on Gen 12. Most units were sold in either Intel vPro or non-vPro trims; vPro configurations generally used the higher-tier processors and tend to be worth more.

Common wear points on used units

Because these were fleet laptops, expect to see asset tag residue on the lid and palm rest, shiny wear on the WASD and arrow keys, and a TrackPoint cap that has gone smooth or is missing entirely. Hinge play, a battery that no longer holds charge, and a stuck privacy shutter are the most common functional issues. None of these disqualify a unit from a cash offer.

Frequently asked questions

01 How do I find out which ThinkPad X1 Carbon generation I have?
The machine type on the bottom sticker is the definitive answer, and you only need the first four characters: 20QD or 20QE is Gen 7, 20U9 or 20UA is Gen 8, 20XW or 20XX is Gen 9, 21CB or 21CC is Gen 10, 21HM or 21HN is Gen 11, and 21KC or 21KD is Gen 12. If the sticker has rubbed off — very common on laptops that spent years in a bag — turn the machine on, press the Windows key, type msinfo32 and press Enter. The System Model line shows the same code. If the laptop will not power on at all, use the visual sequence instead: a short wide 16:9 screen with a fingerprint reader beside the touchpad means Gen 7 or Gen 8; a taller 16:10 screen with the fingerprint reader inside the power button means Gen 9, 10 or 11; and a power button on the right-hand edge of the chassis rather than the keyboard deck means Gen 12. Our Lenovo model number guide covers this in more detail, and you can browse every model we buy on our Lenovo trade-in page.
02 Which ThinkPad models get mistaken for the X1 Carbon?
Several, and getting this wrong is the single most common reason a quote has to be revised after a laptop arrives. Here is how to rule each one out:
  • ThinkPad X1 Yoga — the closest look-alike. Same 14-inch size, same black finish, sold in the same years with overlapping machine types. The test: push the screen back past vertical. An X1 Yoga's hinges rotate a full 360 degrees so the screen folds flat against the bottom of the laptop, and it supports a pen. An X1 Carbon stops at roughly 180 degrees, lying flat like a board, and has no pen support whatsoever. If it folds into a tablet, it is not a Carbon.
  • ThinkPad X1 Nano — same carbon-fiber styling but a 13-inch screen and around 2 pounds. The test: the Nano has only two USB-C ports and no USB-A ports at all. If your laptop has rectangular USB-A ports, it is not a Nano.
  • ThinkPad T14s — a 14-inch thin business ThinkPad sold alongside the Carbon at a lower price. The test: the model name is printed on the palm rest below the keyboard, and the machine type will begin with 20T, 20U (but not 20U9 or 20UA), 20W, 21A, 21F or 21J rather than the Carbon codes listed above. T14s units are usually slightly thicker and heavier, and many have user-replaceable memory.
  • ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 6 (2018, machine type 20KH or 20KG) — one generation older than the earliest model on this page. The test: Gen 6 has a full-size RJ-45-style Ethernet extension port in a different position and lacks the ThinkShutter camera cover that Gen 7 introduced.
  • Gen 7 versus Gen 8 — these two are genuinely indistinguishable by eye. Same chassis, same ports, same weight. The test: the machine type sticker, or check your processor in msinfo32. A processor starting with i7-85, i7-86 or i5-82/i5-83 means Gen 7. If it is a 10th generation chip, the sticker is the only way to be certain, since both generations offered them.
  • Gen 9 versus Gen 10 versus Gen 11 — externally identical. The test: processor generation. An 11th gen chip (four digits starting with 11, like i7-1165G7) is Gen 9; a 12th gen chip (starting with 12, like i7-1260P) is Gen 10; a 13th gen chip (starting with 13, like i7-1365U) is Gen 11.
If you are still unsure after all of this, submit your best guess and note the uncertainty — our intake team verifies every machine type on arrival and will contact you if anything differs.
03 Can I sell an X1 Carbon that is damaged, worn, or locked?
Yes. We buy X1 Carbons in every condition, from pristine to completely dead. Cracked screens, failed batteries, dented lids, missing keycaps, worn-off TrackPoint caps, hinge damage, water exposure and units that will not power on all still have value — just select the matching condition above and the offer adjusts accordingly. Two situations specific to this model are worth flagging honestly, because both are common on ex-corporate ThinkPads and both affect what we can pay:
  • A BIOS supervisor password. If the machine asks for a password before Windows even starts loading, the previous owner's IT department locked the firmware. On ThinkPads this cannot be cleared by removing the battery or resetting anything — it requires a motherboard replacement. Please disclose it, as it significantly reduces the offer.
  • Corporate management enrollment. If the laptop is still registered to a company's Microsoft Intune, Windows Autopilot or Absolute/Computrace account, it will re-enroll itself and lock during setup even after a clean Windows reinstall. This has to be released by the original organization's IT administrator before the device is genuinely free.
Neither of these makes a laptop unsellable — we simply need to know about them in advance so the quote is accurate the first time. Selling several at once? Our corporate device buyback program handles fleet volumes, and there is a bulk selling option as well.
04 What raises the trade-in value of a ThinkPad X1 Carbon the most?
Installed memory is the biggest lever on this particular laptop, and many people don't realize why. On most laptops RAM is a modest value factor because a buyer can add more later for fifty dollars. On the X1 Carbon that is impossible — the memory is soldered to the motherboard on every single generation from Gen 7 through Gen 12, with no slots of any kind. An 8GB Gen 9 is permanently an 8GB machine, which puts a hard ceiling on what the next owner can do with it. A 32GB unit of the same generation is worth substantially more for exactly that reason. If you are not sure how much yours has, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, click the Performance tab, then Memory.

After memory, the factors that move the number most are: generation and processor tier, with Gen 11 and Gen 12 commanding a clear premium and H-series Core Ultra chips outperforming U-series; SSD capacity, where 1TB and 2TB drives add meaningfully; the display option, since Privacy Guard, OLED and high-resolution panels are worth more than the base WUXGA; Intel vPro support; a working battery that still holds a reasonable charge; and cosmetic condition, particularly a lid free of asset-tag residue and glue.

A lot of people also don't realize a service like ours exists at all for a laptop like this. When a work machine gets replaced or a lease ends, the default assumptions are that it belongs in a drawer, that it is only worth something on a marketplace where you deal with strangers and shipping disputes, or that a business-class laptop has no consumer resale route. Gadget Salvation has been buying used electronics for cash since 2008 — you answer a few questions about your device, get an instant quote, ship it to us free with a prepaid insured label, and get paid within about two business days of arrival. No listings, no buyers to haggle with, no waiting for someone to show up. 05 How do I wipe my data, and how do I get paid?
Back up anything you want to keep to an external drive or cloud storage first, then sign out of your accounts and run a factory reset: Settings → System → Recovery → Reset this PC → Remove everything, choosing the option to clean the drive rather than just remove files. Before you do, deauthorize any licensed software tied to the machine, such as Microsoft 365 or Adobe Creative Cloud, so the seat is freed for your next computer.

Because most X1 Carbons started life as work machines, add these steps: sign out of your Microsoft work or school account under Settings → Accounts → Access work or school; ask your former IT department to remove the device from Microsoft Intune, Windows Autopilot and any Absolute or Computrace account; clear the BIOS supervisor password if you have it, by pressing F1 during startup to enter BIOS Setup; and peel off any asset tags or inventory stickers. Our blog has a full walkthrough on removing corporate data before selling a work laptop.

You do not need to unscrew the bottom cover or pull the M.2 drive out yourself. Every device that reaches us goes through certified multi-pass software sanitization regardless of what you did beforehand — the details are on our data erasure protocols page. Once your laptop arrives and passes functional testing, payment is approved within roughly two business days, sent by PayPal, Venmo, Zelle or CashApp, or as a paper check mailed to you. Shipping is free and fully insured in both directions.
