The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga is Lenovo's premium 14-inch business convertible — a 360°-hinge 2-in-1 with a garaged rechargeable pen that folds flat into laptop, tent, stand, and tablet modes. This page covers the modern-chassis generations: Gen 4 (2019), Gen 5 (2020), Gen 6 (2021), Gen 7 (2022), and Gen 8 (2023). Because these five generations share a nearly identical aluminum silhouette but differ significantly on the inside — screen shape, ports, and processor family all changed — your exact generation and configuration set the final resale price. Identify your generation using the guide below, then select your components with our tool above for an instant cash offer. If you'd rather not deal with listing fees, buyer haggling, or shipping hassle, our free trade-in service handles all of that for you — more on that in the FAQ.

Which generation do I have? (2019–2023)

Every X1 Yoga in this range is a 14-inch convertible with a storm/iron-grey aluminum lid and a stowable pen. Because the outside barely changed across five years, the most reliable way to tell them apart is the machine-type code printed on the bottom cover (starts with "Type") plus the screen shape and port layout. On any Windows unit you can also press Windows key + R, type msinfo32, and read the "System Model" line.

❌ Not what you have?

  • 16:9 screen + Ethernet connector = Gen 4 or Gen 5 (check the type code to split them)
  • 16:10 screen + 720p webcam = Gen 6
  • 16:10 screen + 1080p webcam = Gen 7 or Gen 8 (type code splits them)
  • A clamshell that doesn't fold into a tablet is an X1 Carbon, not a Yoga — different page.
  • Gen 1–3 (2016–2018) use an older chassis and aren't listed here.

Display & audio

Display

All are 14-inch multitouch panels with a garaged pen. The big divide is aspect ratio: Gen 4 & Gen 5 are 16:9 (FHD 1920×1080, WQHD 2560×1440, or 4K UHD 3840×2160), while Gen 6, 7 & 8 are the taller 16:10 (WUXGA 1920×1200 or WQUXGA 3840×2400). A WQUXGA OLED panel is available only on Gen 7 and Gen 8. A ThinkPad Privacy Guard option appears across most generations.

Audio

Stereo speakers (2× woofers + 2× tweeters) with Dolby Atmos, plus a quad-microphone 360° far-field array. Gen 6 onward adds Dolby Voice for calls.

Ports & connectivity

The port layout is one of the clearest ways to tell an older X1 Yoga from a newer one, so check yours carefully.

Frequently asked questions

01 How do I find exactly which ThinkPad X1 Yoga generation I have?
The surest way is the machine-type code on the bottom cover, printed next to the word "Type": 20QF/20QG = Gen 4, 20UB/20UC = Gen 5, 20XY/20Y0 = Gen 6, 21CD/21CE = Gen 7, and 21HQ/21HR = Gen 8. If the label is worn off, press Windows key + R, type msinfo32, and read the "System Model" line. As a quick visual check: a 16:9 (widescreen) display with an Ethernet-extension port means Gen 4 or 5, while the taller 16:10 display means Gen 6, 7, or 8. For step-by-step photos, see our guide to finding your Lenovo model number.
02 Is my device an X1 Yoga or an X1 Carbon? They look almost identical.
This is the most common mix-up, and it changes your quote. The X1 Yoga is a convertible — its screen flips a full 360° into tablet mode, and it has a pen that slots into the chassis. The X1 Carbon is a standard clamshell — the lid opens to about 180° and there's no garaged pen. If your screen doesn't fold back and there's no built-in stylus, you have a Carbon and should use its page instead. Also don't confuse this with the 17-inch or gaming Lenovo lines — the X1 Yoga is always a 14-inch business convertible.
03 Can I sell an X1 Yoga with a cracked screen, dead battery, or a broken hinge?
Yes. We buy X1 Yogas in every condition — fully working, cosmetically worn, swollen or dead battery, cracked touchscreen, faulty 360° hinge, or a unit that won't power on. Just describe the condition honestly when you build your quote above and the offer adjusts accordingly. Because this is a convertible, it's worth noting whether the touchscreen and pen still work, since those affect value. Missing the pen or charger is fine too — just tell us so the quote stays accurate.
04 What's the easiest way to sell it — and what actually raises the offer?
Many people don't realize this, but you don't have to list your laptop, photograph it, deal with buyers, or negotiate at all — Gadget Salvation runs a free trade-in service that does the whole thing for you. You answer a few questions, get an instant cash offer, ship it with a prepaid, insured label we provide, and get paid after inspection. On value: because RAM and (on newer models) the CPU are soldered, higher memory and a faster processor are the biggest price drivers — a 32GB or 64GB i7 commands far more than an 8GB i5. A larger SSD, the OLED or 4K screen, and a newer generation all lift the offer too. See how the process works on our How It Works page, browse other models on the Lenovo ThinkPad trade-in page, or read our guides on the best ThinkPads of the year and how to sell your Lenovo without getting lowballed.
05 How do I wipe my data, and how — and when — do I get paid?
Back up anything you want to keep to an external drive or the cloud, sign out of your Microsoft and other accounts, and reset Windows to factory settings. You don't need to remove the SSD — our team runs certified, multi-pass data sanitation on every drive we receive; details are on our data erasure protocols page. If this was a company device managed by IT, ask them to release it from Intune/Autopilot or any MDM enrollment first so it isn't locked. Once your X1 Yoga arrives and passes inspection, payment is approved within about two business days, via PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, CashApp, or a mailed check. The prepaid shipping label is free and fully insured.
